Bovet, Daniel
Swiss-born Italian pharmacologist who received the 1957 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries of certain chemotherapeutic agents. Bovet studied in Geneva, graduating with a doctorate in science in 1929.
He went to the Pasteur Institute in Paris and became head of the therapeutic chemistry laboratory in 1937.
In 1944 Bovet discovered pyrilamine (mepyramine), the first antihistamine, which, in counteracting the effect of histamine, is effective against allergic reactions. In 1947 a search for a synthetic substitute for curare (a muscle relaxant) led to his discovery of gallamine and other muscle relaxants. Among these are derivatives of succinylcholine, whose curare-like action he was the first to recognize. Curare and its synthetic substitutes came into use in conjunction with light anesthesia during surgery to induce muscle relaxation.
In 1947 Bovet was invited to establish a laboratory of chemotherapeutics at the Superior Institute of Health in Rome, and eventually he took Italian citizenship.

Biography
Daniel Bovet
After completing his secondary education at Geneva, Bovet graduated at the University of Geneva in 1927. He then spent some years as Assistant in Physiology to Professor F. Batelli. He then worked under Professor Guyenot, preparing a thesis on zoology and comparative anatomy for which he was awarded the degree of D.Sc. in 1929.
From 1929 until 1947 he worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris then under the direction of Professor E. Roux. Here he worked first as assistant and later as Chief of the Laboratory of Therapeutic Chemistry. This Department was directed by Professor Ernest Fourneau and daily contact with him determined the course of Bovet's future researches.
Bovet has published more than 300 papers on biology, general pharmacology, chemotherapy, the sulphonamide drugs, the pharmacology of the sympathetic nervous system, the therapy of allergic conditions, the synthesis of antihistamines, on curare and curare-like drugs and the use of curare as an adjuvant to anaesthesia, on various modifications of hormonal equilibrium, and on various aspects of the pharmacology of the central nervous system (drugs used for the treatment of Parkinsonism, strychnine and tranquillizers). Important aspects of these researches are embodied in a book by Bovet and his wife, published in 1948 and entitled

Idioma: Inglés ISBN: 0596005652 ISBN-13: 9780596005658 Entrega de 5 a 7 días contra reembolso por agencia urgente* In order to thoroughly understand what makes Linux tick and why it works so well on a wide variety of systems, you need to delve deep into the heart of the kernel. The kernel handles all interactions between the CPU and the external world, and determines which programs will share processor time, in what order. It manages limited memory so well that hundreds of processes can share the system efficiently, and expertly organizes data transfers so that the CPU isn't kept waiting any longer than necessary for the relatively slow disks. The third edition of Understanding the Linux Kernel takes you on a guided tour of the most significant data structures, algorithms, and programming tricks used in the kernel. Probing beyond superficial features, the authors offer valuable insights to people who want to know how things really work inside their machine. Important Intel-specific features are discussed. Relevant segments of code are dissected line by line. But the book covers more than just the functioning of the code; it explains the theoretical underpinnings of why Linux does things the way it does. This edition of the book covers Version 2.6, which has seen significant changes to nearly every kernel subsystem, particularly in the areas of memory management and block devices. The book focuses on the following topics:

In 1929 he gained a DSc in zoology and comparative anatomy from the University of Geneva where his father was professor of pedagogy . He continued research work at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, serving as director from 1936 until 1947 and following up the discoveries of Gerhard Domagk on prontosil. He and his coworkers were able to show that the sulfonamide group is responsible for the antibacterial action of prontosil. The drug is only active in vivo as the animals metabolize the parent drug into sulfanilamide , which is the antibacterial compound. Prontosil was a dye , protected by patents and expensive. Sulfanilamide was colorless , freely available, cheap to manufacture, and equally as effective as a bactericide . Many analogs, known as sulfa-drugs, have been made and these are widely used against streptococcal infections such as pneumonia , meningitis, and scarlet fever.
