Bulky trialkylborohydrides
Brown, Herbert C.; Borohydride hydrogenations using agents of the formula M[RR'R"BH] wherein M is a metal and R, R', and R" are each organic groups, at least one of them being a secondary or tertiary alkyl group, are described herein. These compounds are active hydrogenating agents which are particularly useful because they permit steric control of the hydrogenation of carbonyl groups, they permit selective hydrogenation of functional groups or, where one of the R groups is optically active, they permit stereoselective hydrogenation. A variety of reducing agents have been described in the literature but these do not provide steric control of reaction. That is, they are not selectively active. That means that, where the reduction introduces a new asymmetric center, a mixture of isomers is obtained, although one of the isomers may be favored somewhat. In addition, where several reducible groups are present in the molecule, they are not selectively reducible. These agents include simple borohydrides like sodium borohydride; acid agents such as diborane; alkyl borohydrides such as Li(CH.sub.3).sub.3 BH; and alkoxy borohydrides such as lithium and sodium trimethoxyborohydride. The same is true for aluminohydrides such as lithium tri-t-butoxyaluminum hydride. Dialkylboranes, where the two alkyl groups are bulky, do provide some steric control but the reaction can be particularly slow when the alkyl groups are bulky.
The borohydrides found useful in such hydrogenations have the following general formula

Dioxane-monochloroborane and dioxane-dichloroborane
Brown, Herbert C.; Highly reactive hydroborating agents dioxane-monochloroborane and dioxane-dichloroborane are provided. Also provided by this invention are methods for producing dioxane-monochloroborane, dioxane-dichloroborane and methods for hydroborating olefins with these reagents. This invention relates to novel hydroboration reagents, dioxane-monochloroborane and dioxane-dichloroborane. These compounds are highly reactive hydroborating agents with exceptional properties. Hydroboration processes employing these new hydroborating agents and processes for producing dioxane-monochloroborane and dioxane-dichloroborane are also provided.
SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE
The new, highly reactive hydroborating agents, monochloroborane:dioxane and dichloro-borane:dioxane are disclosed along with their preparation and hydroboration processes employing these new reagents.
DISCLOSURE OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
The dioxane:BH.sub.2 Cl adduct thus obtained was 98% pure by .sup.11 B NMR (+7.9, triplet). The adduct is a liquid, 6.2 M in BH.sub.2 Cl, with a hydrogen to chlorine ratio of 2.00:1.00. The stability of this adduct at 0.degree. C. and room temperature (25.degree. C.) was monitored using .sup.11 B NMR examination of a sealed sample (2 M dioxane:BH.sub.2 Cl in dioxane) in an NMR tube, recording the .sup.11 B NMR at intervals. It was also checked using active hydride analysis. Both of these studies did not show any detectable change over a period of six months.

Psychology is the science of behavior. It covers the behavior of humans and animals, normal and abnormal behavior, and behavior across the life span. The field is concerned both with the development of principles of behavior and with their application to individuals, society, and the institutions of government, business, and mental health. The undergraduate major in psychology is often taken in preparation for graduate education in the field, which is necessary for professional work in psychology. However, the study of behavior relates to almost any program of study or vocation, and courses in psychology are required or recommended for many programs offered at SUNY Brockport. At SUNY Brockport, the psychology major provides students with a broad exposure to these different aspects of the discipline, while allowing concentration in a particular area of interest.
