deutscher Chemiker, Bruder von H. , Buchner, geboren 20.5.1860 Mnchen, verstorben 13.8.1917 Focsani (Feldlazarett, in Rumnien); ab 1896 Professor fr analytisch-pharmazeutische Chemie in Tbingen, ab 1898 Professor fr allgemeine Chemie an der Landwirtschaftlichen Hochschule in Berlin, ab 1909 Professor fr physiologische Chemie in Breslau, seit 1911 in Wrzburg; grundlegende Arbeiten zu Umsetzungen des Diazoessigesters (Buchner-Diazoessigester-Addition; Buchner-Methode der Ringerweiterung) und insbesondere zur alkoholischen Grung des Zuckers, die er 1897 als Folge des von Hefezellen abgespaltenen Enzyms Zymase erkannte; er hatte bei den entscheidenden Untersuchungen festgestellt, da die Grungsreaktion auch im Zellsaft zerriebener Hefezellen stattfindet und damit zum ersten Mal gezeigt, da komplexe biochemische Prozesse auch zellfrei ablaufen knnen; erhielt fr den Nachweis der zellfreien Grung 1907 den Nobelpreis fr Chemie.

Buchner was awarded the 1907 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his biochemical investigations and his discovery of non-cellular fermentation.
