Bunin, Ivan Alekseyevich
(b. Oct. 10 [Oct. 22, New Style], 1870, Voronezh, Russiad. Nov. 8, 1953, Paris, Fr.), poet and novelist, the first Russian to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature (1933) and one of the best of Russian stylists. While working as a journalist and clerk Bunin wrote and translated poetry; his first volume of verse was published in 1891. For his translation of H.W. Longfellow's Hiawatha he was awarded a Pushkin prize in 1903 by the Russian Academy, which later elected him an honorary fellow (1909). He also translated Byron's Manfred and Cain. Bunin , whose poetry has a Parnassian ring, had no use for modern avant-garde trends. Bunin made his name as a short-story writer with such masterpieces as "Gospodin iz San-Frantsisko," the title piece in one of his collections (1916; The Gentleman from San Francisco ). His last book of stories, Tyomnye alley Dark Avenues ), was published in 1943. His longer works include Derevnya The Village Mitina lyubov Mitya's Love Zhizn Arsenyeva ("The Life of Arsenev"), a fictional autobiography (1930;

Bunin, Ivan Alekseyevich I come from an old and noble house that has given to Russia a good many illustrious persons in politics as well as in the arts, among whom two poets of the early nineteenth century stand out in particular: Anna Bunina and Vasily Zhukovsky, one of the great names in Russian literature, the son of Athanase Bunin and the Turk Salma.
All my ancestors had close ties with the soil and the people: they were country gentlemen. My parents were no exception. They owned estates in Central Russia, in those fertile steppes in which the ancient Muscovite czars had settled colonists from all over the country for their protection against Tartar invasions from the South. That is why in that region there developed the richest of all Russian dialects, and almost all of our great writers from Turgenev to Leo Tolstoy have come from there.
I was born in Voronezh in 1870; my childhood and youth were spent almost entirely in the country on my father's estates. During my adolescence the death of my little sister caused a violent religious crisis, but it left no permanent scars on my soul. I had a passion for painting, which, I think, shows in my writings. I wrote both poetry and prose fairly early and my works were also published from an early date.
Ever since I began to publish, my books have been both in prose and poetry, original writings as well as translations (from the English). If one divides my work by genre, one would find volumes of original poetry, two volumes of translations, and ten volumes of prose.

The glossary of names in Solzhenitsyn 's The Gulag Archipelago was used as a 'base' for the historical names, although in time this should become less obvious as more information is added to the page. While it will be fairly obvious to the reader that this page is still under construction, there are many updates planned, so if you don't see what you are looking for, do try back, or e-mail us at admin@pwhce.org and we'll try to prioritise your area of interest.
The list of names below includes many of those individuals for which we aim to have biographies. Some of the names are not links (no entry provided), or lead to entries that are very brief. We welcome contributions of biographies, especially for those names listed below. Note that many of these names may be spelt differently in different publications, owing to the differing orthographical conventions used in converting the Cyrillic alphabet to the Latin.
