Adolf Friedrich Johann Butenandt March 24 January 18 in Munich ) was a German biochemist. He was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in for his work on sex hormones . He finished his studies in Göttingen with a Ph.D. in chemistry, and after his Habilitation he became lecturer in Göttingen . He was professor at the technical university in Danzig , and after a visite in the US, he became director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin Dahlem . The institute was renamed and moved to Tübingen as the Max Planck Institute of biochemistry after the war. it was moved to Martinsried near Munich . Butenandt is credited with the discovery and naming of the silkworm moth pheromone Bombykol in . He was also president of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft from till

Died: Mnchen (Germany), 1995 In 1931, shortly after he had isolated the hormone estrone independently of Edward Albert Doisy, Butenandt became lecturer in Gttingen. Later in 1933 he became professor in Danzig (Gdansk) and in 1936 director of the Max-Planck-Institute (KWI) for biochemistry in Berlin (later in Tbingen and Mnchen). At first his research concentrated on steroid hormones but after 1941 the active substances of insects and cancer were his main fields of interest. In 1939 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry (together with Leopold Ruzicka).

Born in Lehe, near Bremerhaven , he started his studies at the University of Marburg For his Ph.D he joined the working group of the Nobel laureate Adolf Windaus at the University of Göttingen and he finished his studies with a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1927. Estrone Adolf Windaus and Walter Schöller of Schering gave him the advice to work on hormones extraced from ovaries . This research lead to the discovery of estrone and other primary female sex hormones , which were extracted from several thousand liters of urine For this research he won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1939 together with Leopold Ružička who was involved in the synthesis of several newly discovered steroids.

Wirkungsorte: Berlin, Danzig, Gttingen, Mnchen, Tbingen Butenandt erwarb sich besondere Verdienste um die Erforschung der Sexualhormone . Er entdeckte 1929 unanhngig von E. Doisy (1893-1986) und G. Marrian (1904-1981) das Follikelhormon stron und isolierte 1931 als erstes Testikelhormon das Androsteron. Weiterhin entdeckte und synthetisierte er das Progesteron und bewies 1935 zusammen mit L. Ruzicka (1887-1976) durch Partialsynthese die Konstitution des Testosterons.
Butenandt studierte Chemie in Gttingen und Marburg. Nach seiner Promotion 1927 war er zunchst Assistent und ab 1930 Leiter der Organischen und Biochemischen Abteilung der Universitt Gttingen. 1933 wurde er als Professor fr Organische Chemie an die Technische Hochschule Danzig berufen. 1936-1945 war er Honorarprofessor und Direktor des Kaiser-Wilhelm-Instituts fr Biochemie in Berlin.
