Born in San Francisco, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1941 and gained his doctorate in physics from the University of Chicago in 1949. From 1948 until 1950 he was an instructor in physics at the University of California at Berkeley, becoming associate professor in 1954, professor in 1958, and emeritus professor from 1989. The onset of America's involvement in World War II interrupted his university studies, and he spent the years 1942–1946 under the leadership of Emilio Segrè ; working on the Manhattan atom-bomb project at Los Alamos. There he investigated spontaneous fission of the heavy elements and nuclear cross sections. Later he worked with Enrico Fermi on neutron diffraction by liquids.

Owen Chamberlain
American physicist who shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1959 with Emilio Segre for their discovery of the antiproton. This previously postulated subatomic particle was the second antiparticle to be discovered and led directly to the discovery of many additional antiparticles.
Chamberlain worked on the U.S. atom bomb project from 1942 to 1946. Later, while completing his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, he worked at Argonne National Laboratory, in Illinois. In 1948 he joined the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley, where he became a full professor in 1958. There he conducted research on alpha particle decay, neutron diffraction in liquids, and high-energy nuclear particle reactions. He and Segre used the bevatron (a powerful particle accelerator) to produce antiprotons in 1955, and the following year they confirmed the existence of the

IN MEMORIAM Owen Chamberlain Professor of Physics, Emeritus Berkeley In the 1970s Owen moved to the emerging subject of high-energy heavy-ion collisions using the newly commissioned accelerator complex, the Bevalac, that joined the HIlac and Bevatron accelerators at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Owen was one of the few particle physicists to continue at the Bevalac long enough to help train the nuclear scientists from nonrelativistic low-energy fields in the techniques of Bevalac-energy physics. He was instrumental in launching a fruitful Japanese-American collaboration in pion and kaon production studies at the Bevalac. Shcharanski . Owen was among the early opponents of U.S. involvement in Vietnam and often joined in the marches and protests against the war there. It was typical of Owen that in the late 1980s, when invited to Japan to give a series of public lectures, he insisted on visiting Hiroshima to offer his personal apologies in its Peace Memorial Park. He was a very special person who left a lasting imprint on those of us that had the privilege and the pleasure of knowing him. John Rasmussen William Chinowsky Herbert Steiner

Contact: Lynn Yarris (510) 486-5375 lcyarris@lbl.gov Owen Chamberlain Physical Review Letters UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau said, "Owen Chamberlain was an example of Berkeley's best - a brilliant researcher with a piercing intellect, and a gifted and caring teacher. He's the last of the Nobel generation at Cal that emerged from the Manhattan Project and, with E. O. Lawrence's cyclotron, changed the face of physics." Chamberlain was a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. In addition to his scientific efforts, in his later years he also became an outspoken activist for nuclear arms control and other issues of social concern. In the 1960s Chamberlain was a supporter of the Free Speech Movement at UC Berkeley, and a strong advocate for increased minority recruitment and enrollment there. He spoke out against the repression of scientists in the former Soviet Union, demonstrated against the Vietnam War, and was a founder of the nuclear freeze movement of the early 1980s. Funeral and memorial arrangements are pending.
