Georges Charpak
Polish-born French physicist, winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1992 for his invention of subatomic particle detectors, in particular the multiwire proportional chamber.
Charpak's family moved from Poland to Paris when he was seven years old. During World War II Charpak served in the resistance and was imprisoned by Vichy authorities in 1943. In 1944 he was deported to the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau, where he remained until the camp was liberated in 1945. Charpak became a French citizen in 1946. He received his doctorate in 1955 from the College de France, Paris, where he worked in the laboratory of Frederic Joliot-Curie. In 1959 he joined the staff of CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva and in 1984 also became Joliot-Curie professor at the School of Advanced Studies in Physics and Chemistry, Paris. He was made a member of the French Academy of Science in 1985. Charpak built the first multiwire proportional chamber in 1968. Unlike earlier detectors, such as the bubble chamber, which can record the tracks left by particles at the rate of only one or two per second, the multiwire chamber records up to one million tracks per second and sends the data directly to a computer for analysis. The speed and precision of the multiwire chamber and its descendants, the drift chamber and the time projection chamber, revolutionized high-energy physics. Samuel Ting's discovery of the J/psi particle and Carlo Rubbia's discovery of the W and Z particles, which won Nobel Prizes in 1976 and 1984, respectively, involved the use of multiwire chambers; and by the 1990s such detectors were at the heart of almost every experiment in particle physics. Charpak's chamber also has applications in medicine, biology, and industry.

SUMMARY In "Megawatts and Megatons, " world-renowned physicists Richard L. Garwin and Georges Charpak offer an accessible, eminently well-informed primer on two of the most important issues of our time: nuclear weapons and nuclear power. They begin by explaining clearly and concisely how nuclear fission and fusion work in both warheads and reactors, and how they can impact human health. Making a strong and eloquent argument in favor of arms control, Garwin and Charpak outline specific strategies for achieving this goal worldwide. But they also demonstrate how nuclear power can provide an assured, economically feasible, and environmentally responsible source of energyin a way that avoids the hazards of weapons proliferation. Numerous figures enliven the text, including cartoons by Sempe.

Georges Charpak received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1992 for his inventionand development of particle detectors, most notably the multiwire proportional chamber. A number of his colleagues, who received the Nobel Prize before him, had used his invention to make important discoveries in physics. Charpakis credited with creating instrumentation that is used by thousands of otherscientists at CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics located in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as by researchers in other prominent laboratoriesinvolved in the study of the nature of matter. Born on August 1, 1924, in Dabrovica, Poland, to Maurice Charpak and Anna Szapiro, Charpak moved to France with his family in 1929. In 1943 the French Vichy government accused the young Charpak of being a terrorist and sentenced him to the concentration camp in Dachau, West Germany (now Germany). Charpak remained in the camp until its liberation in 1945. Upon his return to France, he completed a degree in civil engineering from the Ecole des Mines in Paris, and in 1946 he became a French citizen. Two years later, as a graduate student in nuclear physics at the Collège de France in Paris, Charpak went to work in the laboratory of physicist Frédéric Joliot-Curie. In this laboratory Charpak began buildingthe equipment he needed to perform his experiments (he constructed his own equipment out of necessity, as the laboratory had none). In 1955 he received his Ph.D. from the Collège de France.

EDITION: BINDING: PUBLISHER: Souvenir Press (05/28/2007) PAGES: This product is not available.
SUMMARY Providing a history and a beautifully illustrated practical guide to kangaroo mothering, this book explains the approach that is changing the way mothers relate to newborn babies and improving the way hospitals treat premature babies and their parents. Already used in 30 countries around the world where incubators are in short supply, kangaroo mothering has been adapted in the Western world alongside incubator care to heal the sense of isolation and helplessness both parents and babies can feel in the tense initial weeks of a baby's life. Once a newborn baby's heart rate and feeding have been stabilized, the babies are positioned in close skin-to-skin physical contact with their mother, or even their father, for 24 hours a day. The book explains how to use the technique and why it helps regulate the baby's body temperature so that it can continue to grow, stimulates breastfeeding, and gives the baby a wonderful feeling of security and strengthened bonding.

Charpak, Georges (1924-), a Polish-born French physicist, devised techniques that revolutionized high-energy physics. Some of his innovations transformed the study of subatomic particles. For his invention of a device that detects such particles, Charpak was awarded the 1992 Nobel Prize in physics. Charpak was born in Dabrovica, Poland. In 1929, his family emigrated to France. During World War II (1939-1945), Charpak joined the French Resistance. In 1943, the Nazi-controlled government arrested him and sent him to the Dachau concentration camp. After the camp was liberated in 1945, he entered the École des Mines in Paris and received a degree in civil engineering. In 1946, he became a French citizen. He studied at the Collège de France and received his Ph.D. degree in 1955. In 1953, he and Dominique Vidal married. The couple has three children. In 1959, Charpak accepted a position at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), in Geneva, Switzerland. Charpak transformed the study of subatomic particles. He developed the multiwire proportional chamber, a particle detector linked to a computer. His innovations eliminated the need for photographic film, which was time-consuming to analyze. At CERN, scientists now use particle accelerators—devices that hurl subatomic particles together at extremely high energies more than 11,000 times a second. The scientists then study the tracks of particles from the collisions. Charpak's chamber can record millions of tracks a second. It has helped scientists discover new subatomic particles and has proven useful in aerospace technology and medical imaging. For his work, Charpak won the 1992 Nobel Prize in physics.
