Other Resources Autobiography In this family of accomplished scholars, I was to become the academic black sheep. I performed adequately at school, but in comparison to my older brother, who set the record for the highest cumulative average for our high school, my performance was decidedly mediocre. I studied, but not in a particularly efficient manner. Occasionally, I would focus on a particular school project and become obsessed with, what seemed to my mother, to be trivial details instead of apportioning the time I spent on school work in a more efficient way. I approached the bulk of my schoolwork as a chore rather than an intellectual adventure. The tedium was relieved by a few courses that seem to be qualitatively different. Geometry was the first exciting course I remember. Instead of memorizing facts, we were asked to think in clear, logical steps. Beginning from a few intuitive postulates, far reaching consequences could be derived, and I took immediately to the sport of proving theorems. I also fondly remember several of my English courses where the assigned reading often led to binges where I read many books by the same author.

About Berkeley Lab Berkeley Lab Director Paul Alivisatos Paul Alivisatos is an award-winning chemist and internationally recognized authority on the fabrication of nanocrystals and their use in solar energy applications. He was named the seventh director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on November 19, 2009 by the University of California Board of Regents on the recommendation of UC President Mark Yudof and with the concurrence of the U.S. Department of Energy. In January of that year, he had been named interim Laboratory director by the UC Regents after Steven Chu stepped down to become the Secretary of Energy. Prior to that Alivisatos had served under Chu as Berkeley Lab’s Deputy Director, a position he assumed on April 7, 2008. Under Alivisatos’ leadership, Berkeley Lab has been awarded in excess of $282 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, lifting its total funding for FY 2010 to a record $827 million. Much of this ARRA funding was the direct result of sustainable energy initiatives that Alivisatos spearheaded along with Chu, most prominently the Helios Project, a joint effort between Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley to develop methods of converting solar energy into renewable transportation fuel. As director of the Helios Solar Energy Research Center, a position he retains, Alivisatos has overseen transformational research into artificial photosynthesis and nano-based photovoltaic technology.
