Sir John Warcup Cornforth, (1917 to present)
Welcome The Cornforth Foundation for Chemistry was established to honour life achievements of former University of Sydney and School of Chemistry students Professor Sir John Cornforth and his constant collaborator and wife Lady Rita Cornforth. Sir John was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1975 for research on the stereochemistry of enzyme-catalysed reactions. The Foundation works to continue the strong tradition of chemistry at the University of Sydney by supporting international collaboration, scholarships, research and teaching in the areas of chemistry pioneered and inspired by Sir John and Lady Rita Cornforth. To achieve these goals, the Cornforth Foundation organises and supports the short-term appointment of prominent international researchers to undertake research and postgraduate teaching at the University of Sydney. He spent the war in Oxford working on the structure of penicillin before joining the staff of the Medical Research Council in 1946. In 1962 Cornforth moved to the Shell research center at Sittingbourne in Kent to serve as director of the Milstead Laboratory of Chemical Enzymology. In 1975 he accepted the post of Royal Society Research Professor at Sussex University, where he served until 1982. In 1951 the American chemist Robert Woodward had succeeded in synthesizing the important steroid , cholesterol; Cornforth was interested in how the molecule is actually synthesized in the cell. Using labeled isotopes of hydrogen, he traced out in considerable detail the chemical steps used to form the C H OH molecule of cholesterol from the initial CH COOH of acetic acid . It was for this work that he shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for chemistry with Vladimir Prelog . Cornforth has also synthesized alkenes, oxazoles, and the

He determined the structures of uric acid, xanthine, caffeine, theobromine, and other related compounds, and he showed that they are all derivatives of a single compound, a nitrogenous base that he named purine. Despite major complications because of stereochemical relations, Fischer was able to use these derivatives to determine the molecular structures of fructose, glucose, and many other sugars, and he was able to verify his results by synthesizing those compounds. He also showed how to distinguish the formulas of the 16 stereoisometric glucoses. In the course of his stereochemical research, Fischer discovered that there are two series of sugars, the D sugars and the L sugars, that are mirror images of each other. His study of sugars led him to investigate the reactions and substances involved in fermentation, and, in his investigations of how enzymes break down sugars, Fischer laid the foundations for enzyme chemistry.
