Mountain Gorilla Protection:
A Geomatics Approach
"Gorillas in the data base"
Introduction: The Mountain Gorilla Geomatics Project began in 1992 as a collaboration between Dr. H. Dieter Steklis, Vice President and Scientific Director of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (D.F.G.F. I.) and Dr. Scott Madry formerly of the Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis located in Rutgers University, currently President of Informatics International, Inc. and Research Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The goal of the project was to use state-of-the-art Geomatics technologies in support of the on-going research activities to preserve the Mountain Gorillas in the Virunga mountains, one of the least mapped and more inaccessible areas in the world. This project was initially designed to create maps for the use of field crews, create vegetation maps, map gorilla movements using GPS receivers, and to integrate ongoing research activities using GIS. It has been ongoing since 1992, and has grown to include researchers and scientists from many institutions and organizations around the world. Our goal is to use advanced remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technologies (often refered to together as "Geomatics" technologies) to provide a digitized database of the mountain gorilla habitat. The database includes layers of information that contain vegetation patterns, gorilla ranging and human use of gorilla habitat, including changes over time, and the impact of human encroachment on the reserve.

Marie Curie (or Maria Skłodowska-Curie , born as Maria Skłodowska ; November 7, 1867 – July 4, 1934) was a Polish French physicist and chemist . She was born in Warsaw and spent her early years there, but in 1891, she moved to Paris where she obtained all her higher degrees and conducted her scientific career. She was the first woman appointed to teach at the Sorbonne . Later, she founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw. Mme. Curie was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity . Together with her husband Pierre Curie , she discovered two radioactive chemical elements polonium and radium . In addition, she correctly interpreted radioactivity as a property of the atoms of radioactive substances—a view that helped other scientists clarify the structures of atoms. She became the first two-time

Biography
Polish-French scientist, a physicist and chemist, winning Nobel Prizes for both in 1903 and 1911 but not allowed in the French Academy of Science as she was female. When Curie was born, Poland was divided between Austria, Germany and Russia. The daughter and fifth child of two teachers, intellectuals and patriots, she learned young to resist the repression of Polish culture by small rebellions. When she was eight, a younger sister died of tuberculosis; two years later her mother died of the same disease. Her father lost his job at the state school, and turned the home into a boarding school. She needed to make a living so began to work as a governess. She fell in love at 18 with the son of the family for whom she worked but the parents objected to a marriage. After her initial anguish, Marie picked herself up and went on. With her wages, she sent her sister Bronia to Paris to put her through the Sorbonne. They planned that once Bronia was established, Marie would join her in Paris for her turn. After four years, in 1891 she joined her sister in Paris to study math, physics and chemistry at the Sorbonne. She proved a brilliant student with an early interest in the magnetic properties of steel. Within two years she received her license in science with the highest marks of her class.

Soon after the marriage, Pierre earned his doctorate. Marie was still working toward her dissertation, but had not chosen a topic. French physicist Antoine Henri Becquerel (1852-1908; first scientist to experiment with radioactivity) had just discovered that uranium salts emitted (gave off) energy. At his suggestion, Marie set out to find other substances that emitted such rays. It was known that the ore pitchblende possessed properties similar to those of uranium, so the Curies chose this ore as the starting point for their research.

Marie and Pierre Curie and the Discovery of Polonium and Radium
    1 December 1996
    Introduction
Marie and Pierre Curie At the end of the 19th century, a number of discoveries were made in physics which paved the way for the breakthrough of modern physics and led to the revolutionary technical development that is continually changing our daily lives. Around 1886, Heinrich Hertz demonstrated experimentally the existence of radio waves. It is said that Hertz only smiled incredulously when anyone predicted that his waves would one day be sent round the earth. Hertz died in 1894 at the early age of 37. In September 1895, Guglielmo Marconi sent the first radio signal over a distance of 1.5 km. In 1901 he spanned the Atlantic. Hertz did not live long enough to experience the far-reaching positive effects of his great discovery, nor of course did he have to see it abused in bad television programs. It is hard to predict the consequences of new discoveries in physics. On November 8, 1895

Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, the youngest of five children. Her father was a physics teacher, her mother, who died when Maria was 11, was also an educator. After graduating with high honors in her early schooling, Marie Curie found herself without options in Poland for higher education. She spent some time as a governess, and in 1891 followed her sister, already a gynecologist, to Paris. In Paris, Marie Curie enrolled at the Sorbonne.
