Curie, Marie
A Pioneer of Science by Rit Nosotro First Published:: 2003
Who is Marie Curie? Poorly educated, underprivileged, and female, this woman was determined to get an education and succeed in her studies. Overcoming numerous obstacles and criticisms, Marie Curie became a pioneer in the field of science, greatly contributing to the worlds of both Physics and Chemistry as we now know them. Born to Bronsilawa Boguska and Wladyslaw Sklodowski on November 7th, 1867, in Warsaw, Poland, Marya (or Maria) Sklodowska showed great promise in academics from a young age. However, lack of family finances caused Marya to become a local schoolteacher before the age of 18, merely pursuing a general education. Much of her earnings went toward the schooling of her sister, Bronia, who was studying medicine in Paris; however, Marya hoped that one day she would be able to attend school as well, hopefully with her sister returning the monetary favors. Marya was interested in sciences as well as mathematics; this was largely due to the fact that her father, Wladyslaw, taught both physics and mathematics and peaked her interest in both. Originally raised as a Catholic, she left the church before she turned 20, and after she married, neither she nor her husband practiced any religion. Marya moved to Paris in 1891 to continue her education in the area of physics and other sciences. Self-taught and tenacious, she easily earned her degree in Physics and went on to receive another degree in Mathematical Sciences. It was in the spring of 1894 that she was introduced to Pierre Curie by a Polish friend of hers. On July 25th of the following year, Marya and Pierre were married and Marya adopted the better known name of Marie Curie. Pierre now joined Marie on her quest for knowledge, working beside her in many experiments and tests.

  • Born: 7 November 1867 Birthplace: Warsaw, Poland Died: 4 July 1934 (leukemia) Best Known As: Discoverer of radium and polonium
Name at birth: Maria Sklodowska A towering figure in the history of chemistry and physics, Marie Curie is most famous for the discovery of the elements polonium and radium. Prohibited from higher education in her native Poland (then controlled by Russia), she moved to Paris in 1891 and studied at the Sorbonne. In 1895 Marie married Pierre Curie (who was by then a noted scientist), and together they began working on radiation experiments with uranium. (It was Marie who first coined the term "radioactivity" to describe the emission of uranic rays.) In 1898 the Curies discovered polonium and radium, and in 1903 they shared the Nobel Prize for physics with Henri Becquerel. When Pierre was killed suddenly in 1906, Marie took over his post as a professor at the Sorbonne, becoming the first woman to teach there. She was awarded a second Nobel in 1911 (this time for chemistry) for her work on radium and its compounds. Concerned more with humanitarian causes than financial rewards, Marie Curie was one of the most celebrated scientists of her time, at a time when the field was almost exclusively for men. It is thought her long exposure to radioactive materials precipitated her death.

Curie, Marie Curie, Marie (1867-1934), Polish-born French chemist who, with her husband Pierre Curie, was an early investigator of radioactivity. Radioactivity is the spontaneous decay of certain elements into other elements and energy. The Curies shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in physics with French physicist Antoine Henri Becquerel for fundamental research on radioactivity. Marie Curie went on to study the chemistry and medical applications of radium. She was awarded the 1911 Nobel Prize in chemistry in recognition of her work in discovering radium and polonium and in isolating radium Marie Curie's maiden name was Maria , and her nickname while growing up was Manya . She was born in Warsaw at a time when Poland was under Russian domination after the unsuccessful revolt of 1863. Her parents were teachers, but soon after Manya (their fifth child) was born, they lost their teaching posts and had to take in boarders. Their young daughter worked long hours helping with the meals, but she nevertheless won a medal for excellence at the local high school, where the examinations and some classes were held in Russian. No higher education was available to women in Poland at that time, so Manya took a job as a governess. She sent part of her earnings to Paris to help pay for her older sister's medical studies. Her sister qualified as a doctor and married a fellow doctor in 1891.

Pierre Curie was already a famous scientist before he married Marie Sklodowska in 1895. This famous couple did not only find true love, they also discovered radium and polonium. For their groundbreaking research in radioactivity, the couple were awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in physics. It was Marie Curie who coined the term "radioactivity", and in her honor, the 1910 Radiology Congress chose the curie as the basic unit of radioactivity. Pierre died from being run over by a horse drawn wagon, but Marie continued their research, and was eventually awarded a second Nobel Prize, the 1911 prize for Chemistry. She died in 1934, suffering from pernicious anemia which had undoubtedly been the result of years of radiation exposure. www.famouscouple.com
