Pierre Curie (May 15, 1859 – died April 19, 1906) was a French physicist, a pioneer in crystallography magnetism piezoelectricity and radioactivity Before joining his wife, Maria Skłodowska-Curie , in her research, Pierre Curie was already widely known and respected in the world of physics. He discovered (with his brother Jacques) the phenomenon of piezoelectricity - in which a crystal can become electrically polarized - and invented the quartz balance. His papers on crystal symmetry, and his findings on the relation between magnetism and temperature also earned praise in the scientific community. He shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in physics with his wife Marie Curie and Henri Becquerel in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel.

Biography
French scientist, a physicist and chemist and the co-discoverer of radium with his wife, Marie, for which they won the Nobel Prize 1903 shared with Henri Becquerel. A professor of physics at the Sorbonne, he married Marie Skladowska on 7/26/1895 and they had two daughters. On 4/19/1906, it was raining hard and crowded with traffic in Old Paris. Pierre, hunched under a large umbrella, walked absentmindedly behind a closed cab. Not looking, he turned left to cross the street directly into the path of a heavy dray pulled by two enormous horses. He threw up his hand as he fell directly into their path. The horses avoided him but the heavy back wheel of the dray crushed his head into 16 fragments. It was 2:30 PM. Link to Wikipedia biography

Curie, Pierre Pierre Curie was a French physicist best known for his work on radioactivity. In 1898, Pierre and his wife Marie Curie presented evidence for the discovery of an additional very active substance that behaved chemically almost like pure barium. They suggested the name of radium for the new element, and henceforth were identified with the discovery of radiation. For this the Curies were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics (1903), which they shared with Henri Becquerel, who was awarded half the price. Pierre also discovered the effect of temperature on paramagnetism, which is now known as Curie's law. Moreover, he proved that ferromagnetic substances exhibited a critical temperature transition, above which the substances lost their ferromagnetic behavior; this is now known as the Curie point. With his brother Jacques, he discovered the piezoelectric effect, namely, crystals that acquire a charge when compressed, twisted or distorted. The curie is a unit of radioactivity (3.7 x 10 decays per second or 37 gigabecquerels) originally named in honor of Pierre Curie by the Radiology Congress in 1910.

Curie, Pierre
(b . May 15, 1859, Paris, Fr.d. April 19, 1906, Paris), French physical chemist and cowinner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903. He and his wife, Marie Curie, discovered radium and polonium in their investigation of radioactivity. Educated by his father, a doctor, Curie developed a passion for mathematics at the age of 14 and showed a particular aptitude for spatial geometry, which was later to help him in his work on crystallography. Matriculating at the age of 16 and obtaining his at 18, he was in 1878 taken on as laboratory assistant at the Sorbonne. There Curie carried out his first work on the calculation of the wavelength of heat waves. This was followed by very important studies on crystals , in which he was helped by his elder brother Jacques. The problem of the distribution of crystalline matter according to the laws of symmetry was to become one of his major preoccupations. The Curie brothers associated the phenomenon of pyroelectricity with a change in the volume of the crystal in which it appears, and thus they arrived at the discovery of piezoelectricity . Later, Pierre was able to formulate the principle of symmetry, which states the impossibility of bringing about a specific physical process in an environment lacking a certain minimal dissymmetry characteristic of the process. Further, this dissymmetry cannot be found in the effect if it is not preexistent in the cause. He went on to define the symmetry of different physical phenomena.

Pierre and Marie Curie
Pierre and Marie Curie are best known for their pioneering work in the study of radioactivity, which led to their discovery in 1898 of the elements radium and polonium. Marie Curie, b. Maria Sklodowska in Warsaw, Poland, Nov. 7, 1867, d. July 4, 1934, spent many impoverished years as a teacher and governess before she joined her sister Bronia in Paris in order to study mathematics and physics at the Sorbonne, earning degrees in both subjects in 1893 and 1894. In the spring of the latter year she met the physicist Pierre Curie. They married a year later, and Marie subsequently gave birth to two daughters, Irene (1897) and Eve (1904). Pierre Curie, b. Paris, May 15, 1859, d. Apr. 19, 1906, obtained his doctorate in the year of his marriage, but he had already distinguished himself (along with his brother Jacques) in the study of the properties of crystals. He discovered the phenomenon of piezoelectricity, whereby changes in the volume of certain crystals excite small electric potentials. Along with work on crystal symmetry, Pierre Curie studied the magnetic properties of materials and constructed a torsion balance with a tolerance of 0.01 mg. He discovered that the magnetic susceptibility of paramagnetic materials is inversely proportional to the absolute temperature (Weiss-Curie's law) and that there exists a critical temperature above which the magnetic properties disappear (Curie temperature).

Pierre Curie was a 19th century French scientist whose work with his wife, Marie Curie , led to some of the most important discoveries in modern physics and chemistry. After an unconventional education at home, Curie attended the Sorbonne in Paris, where he became an assistant teacher in 1878. By 1880 he and his older brother, Jacques, had earned notice for their work demonstrating the electrical potential of quartz crystals when pressure was applied, a phenomenon called piezoelectricity. Pierre took a post at the Paris Municipal School of Industrial Physics and Chemistry and went on to do important work in magnetism, including the discovery that there is a critical temperature at which the magnetic properties of a substance disappear (called the Curie point or Curie temperature). In 1895 Pierre married Marie Sklodowska, and together they made groundbreaking advances in the knowledge of radioactive elements, including the discovery of polonium and radium. They shared a 1903 Nobel Prize in physics with Henri Becquerel for their painstaking work with radioactive elements, and in 1904 Pierre was given a professorship at the Sorbonne. He died unexpectedly in 1906 after being run over in Paris by a horse-drawn carriage.
