There have been numerous Dalai Lamas throughout history. Depicted here is the Eight Dalai Lama, Jamphel Gyatso, who reigned from 1786-1804. The Dalai Lama (meaning "Ocean of Wisdom") is an institution of great importance in Tibetan Buddhism , whose incumbent is considered to be the spiritual figurehead of the Tibetan people. In addition to his supreme religious and temporal authority, the Dalai Lama is also widely revered as an incarnation of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara ("Chenrezig" in Tibetan), known as the embodiment of compassion. All four schools of Tibetan Buddhism respect the Dalai Lama, although he is especially important within the Gelug sect. Historically, the title of the Dalai Lama was introduced in 1578 C.E. when Altan Khan of the Mongols bestowed it upon Sonam Gyatso (1543–1588), the third leader of the Geluk school of Tibetan Buddhism, commonly called the Yellow Hat sect. The title was then retroactively given to his two predecessors dating back to 1391 C.E.

Associated Press Updated March 24, 2009 "I am a simple Buddhist monk no more, no less," His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, said in an interview in The Times. Yet his life has been anything but simple. The man who lays claim as the spiritual and state leader of Tibet was born in 1935 to a peasant family in northeast Tibet. At age 2, he was identified after the death of the 13th Dalai Lama as the 14th reincarnation of the Buddha of Compassion. That recognition brought a new name; Lhamo Thondup now became Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso (Holy Lord, Gentle Glory, Eloquent, Compassionate, Learned Defender of the Faith, Ocean of Wisdom). Taken to Lhasa to be educated, he grew up in a 1,000-room palace, surrounded by doting monks who tutored him in subjects like philosophy, medicine and metaphysics. The People's Liberation Army of China invaded Tibet in 1950, when the 15-year-old Dalai Lama was called upon to assume full powers as head of state. Nine years later, after a Tibetan civilian uprising was brutally suppressed, the Dalai Lama fled to India and set up Dharamsala, the town in the Himalayan foothills of northern India that has served as the capital of the Tibetan exile community since 1960.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet Since 1959 when the Communist Chinese invaded Tibet, forcing the Dalai Lama into exile, he has emerged as an international statesman for peace. His consistent refusal to adopt the use of violence in Tibet's struggle for freedom won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and the respect of the world community. The Dalai Lama is a Buddhist monk, scholar and the temporal and religious leader of the Tibetan people. He is recognized internationally as a champion of human rights, as an environmentalist, and as an advocate of compassion and personal responsibility. Inspired by visits of the Dalai Lama to New Zealand, this website was created and has been maintained as a source of information about this wonderful person. When he visited New Zealand for the first time in 1992, he inspired thousands of people by his steadfast grace and compassion. His words were an uplifting message proclaiming global harmony through individual action. His serene presence was a living testimony of peace even in the face of his exile and the agony of Tibet and its people under 44 years of ruthless domination by the communist Chinese government. He again visited New Zealand in September 1996. The visit was a wonderful success with over 30,000 people coming to five public talks in the main centres. The visit was organised by "The Trust for the Visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to New Zealand," a charitable trust set up to create the opportunity for New Zealanders to see and hear him. His Holiness left New Zealand for a two week visit to Australia. From 20th to 29th September in Sydney, he gave the special Buddhist teaching called the

Wearing his iconic red and yellow robe and offering words of wisdom much like a patriarch would to his children, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, told thousands of University of Miami students that the task of creating a more peaceful and compassionate world lies with them. “That’s your responsibility,” he said at UM’s BankUnited Center, where he spoke to an audience of nearly 8,000 people. The speech, “The Quest for Happiness in Challenging Times,” was the second of two talks the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader gave in South Florida on Tuesday, October 26. Earlier in the day, he spoke at Temple Emanu-El in Miami Beach, calling for respect and compassion for all religions.

At UM, where he last appeared six years ago, the Dalai Lama addressed a range of topics, from compassion and trust to religion, science and technology.

Name at birth: Lhama Thondup or Lhama Dhondrub Born to a peasant family in northeastern Tibet, Lhama Dhondrub was soon recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama (Mongolian for "Ocean of Wisdom"). In Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama is believed to be an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion; when the Dalai Lama dies, his soul is believed to pass into the body of an infant. Upon recognition, Lhama Dhondrub was renamed Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, and is referred to as Yeshe Norbu, the Wishfulfilling Gem or Kundun. Trained as a monk, when the Dalai Lama was a teenager he became the head of the Tibetan government in their fight against the occupying forces of the People's Republic of China. Since 1959 the Dalai Lama has been the leader of the government in exile. His travels in the cause of peace and a free Tibet have made him an international celebrity, and in 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Previous: D.H. Lawrence
