    (September 27, 1871—August 15, 1936) was an Italian writer whose works won her the Nobel Prize for Literature for 1926.

    Born in Nuoro , into a bourgeois family, she attended elementary school and then was educated by a private tutor (a guest of one of her relatives) and moved on to study literature on her own. She first published some novels on the magazine L'ultima moda when it still published works in prose and poetry. Nell'azzurro , published by Trevisani in 1890 might be considered as her first work. Still between prose and poetry are, among the first works, Paesaggi sardi , published by Speirani in 1896. In 1900, after having married Palmiro Madesani, functionary of the Ministry of War met in Cagliari in the October of 1899, the writer moved to Rome and after the publishing of Anime oneste in 1895 and of Il vecchio della montagna in 1900, plus the collaboration with magazines

    Deledda, Grazia (1871-1936) Portrait Biographic Details Digitized Texts Editions of Works Grazia Maria Cosima Damiana Deledda Eugenia Grandet . She received the 1926 Nobel Prize for Literature, although her accomplishment has long been tarnished by the suspicion that she won the prize over her compatriot Matilde Serao for political reasons. She died of breast cancer in Rome in 1936. Deledda did not write in dialect, even though standard Italian would have been much more foreign to her than her native Sardinian dialect. Her works, however, are strongly flavored by Sardinian culture: the dialects, traditions, people, and landscape, and a pessimism born of centuries of oppression. Deledda's first novels adhere to the superficiality of the fauteuil novel ( Stella d'Oriente , published under the pseudonym Ilia di Sant'Imael in 1890; Amore regale Amori fatali Fior di Sardegna , 1892), but subsequently mature to include a lyrical, but pessimistic, portrait of Sardinian life ( Anime oneste La giustizia Dopo il divorzio , 1903 [subsequently Naufraghi in porto Elias Portolu , 1903).
