Dirac , Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac , Paul Adrien Maurice (1902-84), British theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate, renowned for his prediction of the existence of the positron, or antielectron , and for his research in quantum theory. Dirac was born in Bristol, England, and educated at the universities of Bristol and Cambridge. His quantum theory of electron motion led him in 1928 to postulate the existence of a particle identical to the electron in every aspect but charge, the electron having a negative charge and this hypothetical particle a positive one. Dirac's theory was confirmed in 1932 when the American physicist Carl Anderson discovered the positron. In 1933 Dirac shared the Nobel Prize in physics with the Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger, and in 1939 he was made a fellow of the Royal Society. He was a professor of mathematics at Cambridge from 1932 to 1968, a professor of physics at Florida State University from 1971 until his death, and a member of the Institute for Advanced Study periodically between 1934 and 1959. Dirac's writings include Principles of Quantum Mechanics See also Electron; Physics:

English physicist whose calculations predicted that particles should exist with negative energies. This led him to suggest that the Electron had an " Antiparticle ". This Antielectron was discovered subsequently by Carl Anderson in 1932, and came to be called the Positron . Dirac also developed a "spinor" version of the , known as the Dirac Equation , which is relativistically correct. For his work on antiparticles and wave mechanics, he received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1933.

May 11th, 2009 Science Textbooks Guide Scientist And Researchers English physicist Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac was born in Bristol, in the family born in Sweden Charles Adrien Ladislav Dirac, a teacher of French in a private school, and an English Florence Hanna (Holten) Dirac. First, Dirac studied at a commercial college in Bristol, then studied electrical engineering at Bristol University, who graduated in 1921 with a bachelor of science degree. Even at the university he became interested in the theory of relativity of Albert Einstein, and for two years beyond the normal course of studying math. Then he enrolled in graduate school in mathematics College St. John's in Cambridge and in 1926 he defended his doctoral dissertation. The following year, Dirac
became a member of the Scientific Council of the same college. In years when Dirac was graduate school in Cambridge, Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Shredinger developed their formulation of quantum mechanics by using quantum theory to the description of the atomic and subatomic systems and the movement of particles such as electrons. Dirac equation began to study the Heisenberg and Schrdinger, as soon as they were published in 1925, while with some useful observations. One of the disadvantages of quantum mechanics was that it was designed only for particles with a low rate (compared with the speed of light), so as to ignore the effects, before Einstein's theory of relativity. The effects of the theory of relativity, such as increasing the particle with mass increased speed, are significant only when the speed begin to approach the speed of light. Shredinger first tried to lift the restriction on the speed of quantum mechanics, but did not succeed in doing so.

Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac was born on 8th August, 1902, at Bristol, England, his father being Swiss and his mother English. He was educated at the Merchant Venturer's Secondary School, Bristol, then went on to Bristol University. Here, he studied electrical engineering, obtaining the B.Sc. (Engineering) degree in 1921. He then studied mathematics for two years at Bristol University, later going on to St. John's College, Cambridge, as a research student in mathematics. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1926. The following year he became a Fellow of St.John's College and, in 1932, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge.
Dirac's work has been concerned with the mathematical and theoretical aspects of quantum mechanics. He began work on the new quantum mechanics as soon as it was introduced by
