Ehrlich, Paul
Through his comprehensive study of the effects of chemicals in the human body, Paul Ehrlich (1854-1915) fathered the fields of chemotherapy (the treatment of disease with chemical agents) and hematology (the study of blood). He also made important contributions to the understanding of immunity and discovered Salvarsan, the first effective treatment for syphilis. Paul Ehrlich. Ehrlich was born in 1854 in Strehlen, Germany, to a prosperous Jewish family. His interest in biology and chemistry led him to study medicine. He attended universities in Breslau, Strasbourg, Frieberg-im-Briesgau, and Leipzig, earning his medical degree in 1878. Ehrlich was fascinated by the reactions of cells and tissues to dyes. He developed new ways of staining cells to identify different types during his research. In 1890, Ehrlich became a professor at the University of Berlin, where he worked with

Ehrlich, Paul
GERMAN CHEMIST AND BACTERIOLOGIST
Paul Ehrlich made notable contributions in several areas of medicine including selective dye staining of cells, immunology, cancer research, and chemical therapy of infectious diseases. Ehrlich was born in Strehlen, Germany, and attended school in Breslau where an older cousin, Carl Weigert, was a physician at a local hospital. Weigert was researching cell staining with synthetic dyes, a procedure that makes cells more visible under a microscope. Weigert demonstrated the technique for his teenage cousin who was immediately fascinated by the process. Following graduation from medical school in 1878, Ehrlich accepted a position at a Berlin hospital where he employed his knowledge and skill with synthetic dyes to make numerous important contributions to medicine. He was able to use dyes to differentiate several types of red and white blood cells, including leukemia cells, and to assist German bacteriologist Robert Koch in staining and identifying the tuberculosis bacterium. Cell staining remains in use to identify both healthy and cancerous cells. In 1883 Ehrlich married a young woman named Hedwig Pinkus, to whom he was quite devoted. They had two daughters, Stephanie and Marianne. In 1888 Ehrlich himself developed tuberculosis, left employment at the hospital, and took a yearlong trip to Egypt where he recovered from the infection.

Experience what only a few have heard to date...Paul's voice over for Universal Studio's Castle Dracula live show in 1980!!! It was a source of great distress to my father (for obvious reasons) that his 16 year old daughter was more fanatic about Paul Lynde than she was about Bobby Sherman, Tommy Roe In 1974, I saw Paul Lynde in person. He was performing in "No Hard Feelings". After the performance, I got him to sign the playbill & had someone take a picture of the two of us. Of course, I still have these items! Treasures! I even asked him how Harry (Harry MacAfee, his dog, named for his character in "Bye, Bye Birdie") was doing. He replied politely (but with distance) "He's back in (I think he said Sunnyvale.)" So I can truly claim I had a conversation with him. Albeit a short one. ;-) I used to have an extensive collection of photos (mostly from magazines) but over the course of several moves, had pared it down. Many/most of these photos were the Daily Mirror/Televison World/ScuzRUs type magazines (that's pretty much all you could get if you were a young teen in the midwest in the 70's!) but did include the occasional TV Guide issue as well as the infamous "People" issue. All of the "scuzzy" magazines were trashed along the way as I meandered from one coast to the other & grew into adulthood. They were replaced by press/photo releases, scripts, etc, that I found along the way. I also used to have several cassette recordings of the original Hollywood Squares but most of them have been lost along the way, as well.

Home Virtual Museum Individual Artists : Paul Signac Paul Signac: 1863 - 1935 Paul Signac was born in Paris in 1863 and became an early admirer of Monet . He painted in Paris with his friend Armand Guillaumin, an artist on the fringe of Impressionism. In 1884 he met Monet himself and Georges Seurat
As a result of discussions with Seurat , Signac was suddenly drawn away from Impressionism by the pursuit of the Divisionist style of painting, which consisted in the use of small dots of color, intended to combine and blend not on the canvas but in the viewer's eye. An early example, Seurat's Une Baignade , was exhibited in the summer of 1844 at the Paris Salon des Independants, of which he and Seurat were founding members. Signac was tireless in his attempts to convert others to Seurat's methods. In 1886, for instance, he noticed some Divisionist paintings by Emile Bernard and went to visit him, hoping to enlist another disciple for Seurat . But he succeeded only in alienating Bernard, who became a violent opponent both of Signac and of divisionism.
In 1885 Signac met Camille Pissarro , whom he introduced to Seurat. Pissarro had reached a critical point in his artistic development. Finding in Seurat's technique the answer to his craving to a rational style, he adopted it with enthusiasm. Against the wishes of the Impressionists, he invited the Pointillist to participate in their eighth and last group show in 1886. On this occasion Signac exhibited mostly scenes of the Breton port of Saint-Briac and of the Paris suburbs. a big canvas
