Paul of Venice
First published Wed Aug 22, 2001; substantive revision Wed Oct 12, 2005 Paul of Venice was the most important Italian thinker of his times, and one of the most prominent and interesting logicians of the Middle Ages. His philosophical theories (culminating in a metaphysics of essences which states the ontological and epistemological primacy of universals over any other kind of beings) are the final and highest result of the preceding realistic tradition of thought. He fully developed the new form of realism started up by Wyclif and his Oxonian followers in the last decades of the 14 th century, and renewed Burley's attacks against nominalistic views. The metaphysical convictions at the basis of his philosophy are an original version of the most fundamental theses of Duns Scotus (viz. univocity of being; existence of universal forms outside the mind, which are at the same time identical with and different from their own individuals; real identity and formal distinction between essence and being; thisness as the principle of individuation; real distinction among the ten categories). But Paul puts much more stress on the ontological presuppositions and entailments of the doctrine. Simultaneously, he was open to influences from many other directions, as he held in due consideration also the positions of authors such as Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, and Giles of Rome, and critically discussed the doctrines of the main Nominalists of the 14

The painting probably originates from the collection of the art dealer Ambroise Vollard and was at last probably in possession of Erich Slomovic. The front and back are painted. The back could be assigned to the time in Brittany. The front probably originates from the time on Tahiti and is marked with “P. Gauguin” and dated with “92”. On the back still the remainders of a stamp can be recognized. It probably concerns a tariff stamp of receipt Marseille at that time.
The painting is at present in private property and is to be assigned to Paul Gauguin. Startpage Photos Description History ... Contact

Background
Dr. Pauling, welcome to Berkeley. Thank you. I wonder if you might recall for us the early days of the peace movement right after the Second World War. You were a member of Einstein's Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, one of the first efforts. And very early on, you were advocating against the production of the hydrogen bomb, even in the late 40s. I opposed the construction of the hydrogen bomb on the, I think, rather reasonable grounds that an ordinary atomic bomb could destroy a whole city, even the biggest cities. It could do much damage, perhaps kill a million people out of the 10 million in a large city, and that there was no need to accelerate the arms race by developing weapons a thousand times more powerful. Paul Giamatti has long been considered one of Hollywood's most interesting character actors, almost exemplifying an 'everyman' quality. As we chat in a Toronto hotel room, the always ebullient Giamatti says he tries to constantly figure that out. "I think it has a lot to do with how I get cast what people want me to do because of the way I look I think I am a kind of an off beat looking guy at best," the actor says, in between mouthfuls of salad. That sense of ordinariness that we often associate with Giamatti' s characters, is put to the test most effectively in Sideways, a film that is garnering more attention for the actor than any of its predecessors. In Sideways, Giamatti plays Miles Faymond, a divorced middle school teacher and failed novelist, who, with his altar-bound friend Jack (Thomas Haden Church) take a wine-tasting trip in California, pondering questions about their directions in life. Giamatti says that his odd looks help him tap into the apparent ordinariness of a character like Miles. "Yeah in a weird way, I like to find the quirkiness in ordinary things. I like to find what is ordinary in quirky people," the actor explains. "It is funny, as my own personal tastes in other peoples performances and in art in general runs to grotesque, morose things but then in my own acting I tend to do these ordinary things; there's something fascinating about ordinary."
