Biography
Manfred Eigen
Eigen's scientific development is reflected in the close on 100 papers he has published. The subject matter of these works ranges from the thermodynamic properties of water and aqueous solutions, and the theory of electrolytes, through thermal conductivity and sound absorption, to fast ionic reactions.
At the same time, however, his attention turned also to biochemical questions, which now claimed his chief interest. These questions ranged from hydrogen bridges of nucleic acids, through the dynamics of code transfer, to enzymes and lipid membranes. Biological control and regulation processes, and the problem of the storage of information in the central nervous system also occupy his attention. Practically every year he travels together with his friend and colleague Leo de Maeyer to Boston to discuss topics of common interest with American neurologists, biochemists, and biophysicists.

Abstract
A method is described that provides for detection and identification of single molecules in solution. The method is based on fluoresence correlation spectroscopy, which recoords spatio-temporaal correlation among fluctuating light singles, coupled with devices for trapping single molecules in an electric field. This technique is applied to studies of molecular evolution, where it allows fast screening of large mutant spectra in which targets are labeled by specific fluorescent ligands. The method expands the horizon in molecular diagnostics by making it possible to monitor concentrations down to (less than) 10^-5 M without any need for amplification. 11. Manfred Kyber (1880-1933)
Short biography and bibliography.
http://www.jbeilharz.de/autores/kyber/
Manfred Kyber
Manfred Kyber, born on March 1, 1880 in Riga, Latvia (then under Russian rule), grew up on his father's estate. He studied philosophy in Leipzig and later moved to Berlin, where he lived for ten years and published his first works. He lived in Lwenstein, Wrttemberg (southern Germany) since 1923. In addition to poems, a novel, plays, theater criticism and an introduction to occultism, he primarily wrote fairy tales and animal stories partially humorous, partially serious which, reminiscent of La Fontaine, humanize animals to a certain degree to convey their feelings and elaborate on philosophical questions. He became famous for his stories "Unter Tieren" ("Among Animals"). He was a pacifist and advocate of animals' rights. He died on March 10, 1933 in Lwenstein. There is a Manfred Kyber museum in Lwenstein near Heilbronn, Germany. His Great Moment (translation of the story Der groe Augenblick

14. His Great Moment
A short story by Manfred Kyber.
http://www.alb-neckar-schwarzwald.de/autores/kyber/moment.html
Manfred Kyber
His Great Moment
A little bird sat in his cage and looked into the sunshine with longing eyes. He was a songbird and lived in a civilized country at least it called itself that. In the blue distance there were blue mountains. The south is behind those mountains, the little bird thought. I've only flown that way once. Then never again. The distant mountains seems very close to him. His longing made them move so close to the bars of his cage. They are so very close, said the little bird. If only those bars weren't there. If only the door opened just once. Then my great moment would come, and I'd be behind the blue mountains with a few beats of my wings. The cranes migrated south. Their lamenting cry sounded through the autumn air plaintive and tempting. They vanished behind the blue mountains. The little bird fluttered against the bars of his cage. Winter came, and the little bird grew silent. Snow fell, and the blue mountains turned grey. The route to the south lay shrouded in coldness and mist. Many winters and many summers passed. Many years passed. The mountains turned blue and then grey again. Migratory birds returned from the south and flew back south. The little bird behind the bars of his cage was waiting for the great moment.

Eigen, Manfred
