Main characters
Searching the Internet for information about this book I’ve read, called ‘Murder in the cathedral’ by T.S. Eliot, I came upon a page about one of his murderers, Hugh de Morville.
And I’ve decided to make this part of the report about one secondary character in particular, not about all of them.
I hope you don’t mind.
Hugh de Morville, died in 1240, was one of the murderers of St. Thomas of Canterbury.
Problably he was the son of Hugh de Morville, who held the barony of Burgh-By-Sands, Cumberland, and several other estates in the northern shires, and Ada, who was the daughter of William de Engaine.
From the beginning of the reign of Henry II he was attached to the court, and is constantly mentioned as witnessing character. His name occurs also as a witness to the Constitutions of Clarendon.
He married Helwis de Stuteville, and became possessor of the castle of Knaresborough
He had been one of Becket’s men when he was Chancellor, but he had always been on the King’s side, and he was easily stirred by the King’s bitter words to avenge him on the Archbishop.
