Richard R. Ernst acted since 1976 as a full Professor of Physical Chemistry at ETH Zürich, and he retired in 1998. He was born 1933 in Winterthur. He finished 1962 his studies at the ETH Zurich with a dissertation on nuclear magnetic resonance in physical chemistry. 1963 he joined Varian Associates as a scientist and developed Fourier-transform NMR, noise decoupling, and several other techniques. 1968 he returned to ETH Zurich, became 1968 Lecturer, 1970 Assistant Professor, 1972 Associate Professor, 1976 Full Professor. Since 1968, he headed a research group devoted to methodological developments in liquid state and solid state NMR. He developed two-dimensional NMR and novel pulse techniques. He contributed to the development of medical magnetic resonance tomography, and in collaboration with Professor Kurt Wüthrich to the development of the NMR structure determination of biopolymers in solution. Lately, he was involved in the study of intramolecular dynamics
He was president of the Research Council of ETH Zurich and was a member of the Swiss Science Council, of the COST Committee, and of the Foundation Marcel Benoist. Presently, he was a member of the Hochschulrat of the Technische Universität Munich, and Vicepresident of the Board of Bruker BioSpin AG, Fällanden. He is on the editorial board of more than 10 scientific journals.

Richard Garrick
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Richard Garrick (December 27, 1878 – August 21, 1962) was a director and actor. He was born Richard Thomas O'Brien in the townland of Portlaw County Waterford Ireland . His father, James E. O'Brien, was a master tailor in that town, counting among his clients Lord Waterford as well as other nobility and landed gentry. In 1882, James left Portlaw for the United States. He landed in the town of North Adams, Massachusetts , where there were cotton mills and the need for a clothesmaker. Two years later, his wife Johanna and children followed. In 1898, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army . He served as a Corporal in Company M, U.S. 26th Infantry Regiment stationed in Miagao, Iloilo , in the Philippines in 1900 during the Philippine-American War . When he returned to North Adams, he worked for a time in his father's tailor shop, then struck out on his own. He ventured to New York City where he landed roles in stage productions, among them The Boys of Company B The Flag Lieutenant The Fourth Estate and The Monkey's Paw . By 1912 Garrick was in Los Angeles and became a charter member of The Reel Club . Through the early 1910s, Garrick acted in, as well as directed

Ernst, Richard R.,
in full RICHARD ROBERT ERNST (b. Aug. 14, 1933, Winterthur, Switz.), Swiss researcher and teacher who in 1991 won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his contribution to the applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Ernst's refinements made NMR techniques a basic and indispensable tool in chemistry and also extended their usefulness to other sciences. In 1968 he returned to Switzerland to teach at his alma mater. He was made assistant professor in 1970 and full professor in 1976. His second major contribution to the field of NMR spectroscopy was a technique that enabled a high-resolution, "two-dimensional" study of very large molecules. With Ernst's refinements, scientists were able to determine the three-dimensional structure of organic and inorganic compounds and of biological macromolecules such as proteins; to study the interaction between biological molecules and other substances such as metal ions, water, and drugs; to identify chemical species; and to study the rates of chemical reactions. Ernst also was credited with many inventions and held several patents in his field.

Autobiography
I was born 1933 in Winterthur, Switzerland, where our ancestors resided at least since the 15th century. We lived in a home built in 1898 by my grandfather, a merchant. My father, Robert Ernst, was teaching as an architect at the technical high school of our city. I had the great luck to grow up, together with two sisters, in a town that combined in a unique way artistic and industrious activities. Invaluable art collections and a small but first rank symphony orchestra carry the fame of Winterthur far across the borders of Switzerland. On the other hand, industries producing heavy machinery, like Diesel motors and railway engines, provided the commercial basis of prosperity.
I thus decided to leave the university forever and tried to find an industrial job in the United States. Among numerous offers, I decided for Varian Associates in Palo Alto where famous scientists, like Weston A. Anderson, Ray Freeman, Jim Hyde, Martin Packard, and Harry Weaver, were working

While much of our early gathering of ancestral information involved previously researched material, we felt that our proximity to New England and Nova Scotia vital statistics gave us a unique opportunity to verify each ancestral link, one-by-one, working out from ourselves. We are continuing to verify information all the time. Each of our families are tied to New England and Maritime Canada.
My father's Richards and White ancestry originate at Newfoundland, Canada at about 1900, and is currently under investigation.
My father's Copeland and Thompson lines are descended from the area of Pictou County, Nova Scotia, to about 1790. Interestingly, my mother's Nova Scotia heritage is linked to early Colonial Cape Cod. That is ... Nickerson, Eldredge, Smith, Crowell, Kenney, and Kendrick families from the towns of Chatham and Harwich, Mass. sailed up to Nova Scotia in 1758. If you've ancestral heritage in the Barrington, Clark's Harbour and Cape Sable Island region of Nova Scotia, take note, as you are almost certainly descendant of the Mayflower, Fortune, or Anne! See the Descendants of Stephen Hopkins, below.
The Lewis, Harrington, Winslow and Blagdon lines go to the State of Maine, where my research picks up currently at about 1797.

The surnames I am searching are Richards (Prince Edward Island, Canada), Arnold (Nova Scotia, Canada), Merrill, Decker, Braisted, Petit, Van Clief, Schwalbe (Staten Island, New York), Williams, Richards and Pugh (Edwardsville, Pa).
The Richards family moved to Brooklyn, New York from Prince Edward Island about 1892. Then to Staten Island prior to the 1910 Census. I am mainly trying to trace my family roots in Canada and finding cousins living today in the New York / New Jersey area.
I would like to exchange family info with others.

// Included to access cookie for webpub email feature window.name = 'GooGooBar'; DisplayAd('top', 728, 90); This research is an ongoing project. My family names being researched include; Beeghley, Biles, Hodge, Hunt, Lincoln, Mack, MacDonald, Mosser, Langley, Steele, Stewart, Patterson and Richards just to name a few.
My daughters' paternal families have also been included; Murray Family (who arrived in the United States in 1858), Vourron, Socie, Rebillot and branches of those families. We thank these families for their contributions to this research.
The Murray, Richards and Steel hit the shores of the US as follows: Murrays line arrived in 1858, Richards line arrived in 1823, the Steel line landed in 1905. The Steel, Hodge, Mack, MacDonald, Patterson and Stewart families originated in Scotland which is where our research is now taking place. The Richards and Murray families originated in Ireland. Another place we are now conducting research. However, we have learned that if the Irish families were Catholic, there are very few records left due to the conflicts in Ireland. The Beeghley and Biles and Hunt families originated in England. The Vourron family originated in France.
These families have one thing in common, besides us, they all made the arduous trip across an ocean in search of a better life. We only hope that this research will echo the courageous efforts they made for our sake.
