Home Library Science Dictionary of Scientists German–Swedish biochemist (1873–1964) Euler-Chelpin was born at Augsburg in Germany and educated at the universities of Berlin, Strasbourg, and Göttingen and at the Pasteur Institute. In 1898 he moved to Sweden being appointed to the staff of the University of Stockholm, where in 1906 he became professor of general and inorganic chemistry . In 1929 he also became director of the Institute of Biochemistry where he remained until his retirement in 1941. Although he became a Swedish citizen in 1902 he served Germany in both world wars. In 1904 important work by Arthur Harden had shown that enzymes contain an easily removable nonprotein part, a coenzyme . In 1923 Euler-Chelpin worked out the structure of the yeast coenzyme. He showed that the molecule is made up from a nucleotide similar to that found in nucleic acid . It was named diphosphopyridine nucleotide (now known as NAD).

Euler-Chelpin, Hans (Karl August Simon) von
(b. Feb. 15, 1873, Augsburg, Ger.d. Nov. 7, 1964, Stockholm), Swedish biochemist who shared the 1929 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Sir Arthur Harden for work on enzymes in the fermentation of sugar. After graduating from the University of Berlin (1895), Euler-Chelpin worked with Walther Nernst and in 1897 became assistant to Svante Arrhenius at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He joined the faculty at the University of Stockholm (1900), where he became professor of general and inorganic chemistry (1906) and director of the new biochemical institute (1929). Euler-Chelpin's work with coenzymes advanced knowledge of the biochemistry of sugar and phosphates. He also helped elucidate the chemical structures of several vitamins. Biography
Hans von Euler-Chelpin was born on February 15, 1873, at Augsburg. His father, who was then a captain in the Royal Bavarian Regiment, was transferred to Munich and von Euler-Chelpin spent most of his childhood not far away with his grandmother at Wasserburg. After going to school at Munich, Wurzburg and Ulm, he studied art from 1891 until 1893 at the Munich Academy of Painting, first under Schmid-Reutte and later under Lenbach, whose gifted and powerful personality greatly influenced him. His desire to study problems of colour and especially the colour of the spectrum led von Euler-Chelpin to begin, in 1893, the study of science.
He therefore went to the University of Berlin to study chemistry under Emil Fischer and A. Rosenheim, and physics under E. Warburg and
