Il reçoit le Prix Nobel de physiologie ou médecine en pour sa découverte du carcinome spiroptère , dans le cadre de recherches sur le cancer menées à l'Institut d'anatomie pathologique de Copenhague, dont il était le directeur. Ultérieurement, la cause des cancers étudiés par Fibiger était une carence en vitamine A, et non à la présence de vers nématodes . L'étude portait sur une population de rats et Fibiger avait simplement omis de comparer avec des échantillons témoins

Studiował w Berlinie m.in. u Roberta Kocha i Emila Behringa . W roku uzyskał stopień doktora medycyny, a w roku w Kopenhadze obronił doktorat naukowy. Od roku był profesorem uniwersytetu kopenhaskiego. Jeden z założycieli czasopisma "Acta Pathologica et Microbiologica Scandinavica". Jako pierwszy wywołał eksperymentalnie zmiany w żołądku szczurów poprzez karmienie karaluchami zawierającymi postaci larwalne nicienia spiroptera neoplasmatica . Fibiger zaobserwował przerzuty i wytwarzanie dalszych guzów. Opisał zmiany jako złośliwe (rakowate) i w roku został uhonorowany Nagrodą Nobla . Jego odkrycie, mimo że nie znalazło potwierdzenia, zapoczątkowało doświadczenia nad rakiem
