Biography
French writer, a novelist and critic who won the Nobel Prize in 1921. The author of 50 volumes on a wide variety of subjects, he earned fame in his own lifetime. His work includes "Penguin Island" and "Thais." The son of a bookseller, he attended College Stanislas 1855-1862 and joined a publishing firm, writing literary articles and his first volume of poems. His first novel, "Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard" was a success when released in 1881. He was elected to the Academie Francaise in 1896. France married Marie-Valerie Guerin de Sauville in 1877 and they divorced in 1893. His life was greatly influenced by Madame Arman de Caillavet, with whom he had an affair until her death in 1910. He died on 10/12/1924, Tours, France. Since his death, France's reputation has diminished, but at least six of his books will probably survive the changing tastes of time.

Customer Reviews
Nothing new under the sun Though this was published in 1909 you would swear it just came from Newsweek, Time or The Atlantic magazines. This is both comforting and disturbing to know that there is nothing new under the sun. Same old politics, revising history, putting a new spin on current events and just plain old human tendencies crop up in this great little book. Anatole France captured the daily lives we're familiar with and shows that it's an ongoing story since time began. Comforting because you feel that we're not the only group of people to live through turmoil and disturbing because "here we go AGAIN". Sometimes it seems a bit tedious but well worth the read. NOT light fiction... great French literature (details)

Anatole France [pseudonym for Jacques Anatole Thibault] (1844-1924) , French author wrote Les Dieux Ont Soif (1912) [The Gods Will Have Blood], set during the French Revolution. Anatole France was born in Paris on 16 April 1844. After attending school, including the boys' school Collge Stanislas in Paris, France worked for his father in his bookshop. He also started writing poetry and articles critical of church and state that were published in various newspapers of the day including Le Globe L'Echo de Paris and Le Temps, . They would later be published in the collected volumes La Vie Litteraire (1888-1892) and Opinions Sociales His marriage in 1877 was possibly unsuccessful due to his long term relationship with Mme de Caillavet who was a firm supporter and influence on his writing. As a respected critic and member of "Les Parnassiens", France went on to achieve acclaim with the novel Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard (1881) [The Crime of Sylvester Bonnard]. He wrote a number of semi-autobiographical novels including

writer and ironic, skeptical, and urbane critic who was considered in his day the ideal French man of letters. He was elected to the French Academy in 1896 and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921. The son of a bookseller, he spent most of his life around books. At school he received the foundations of a solid humanist culture and decided to devote his life to literature. His first poems were influenced by the Parnassian revival of classical tradition, and, though scarcely original, they revealed a sensitive stylist who was already cynical about human institutions. This ideological skepticism appeared in his early stories: Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard (1881), a novel about a philologist in love with his books and bewildered by everyday life; ), which discreetly mocks belief in the occult; and (1890), a tale set in Egypt of a courtesan who becomes a saint, and Le Lys rouge The Red Lily ), a love story set in Florence. A marked change in France's work first appears in four volumes collected under the title L'Histoire contemporaine (1897-1901). The first three volumes
