Frank James was born in Clay County, Missouri on 10th January, 1843. His father left home as a child in search of gold in California and never returned. Frank and his brother Jessie James were brought up by their mother, Zeralda James. The James family were owners of slaves and supported the Confederate Army during the American Civil War . In 1862 William Quantrill established a band of guerilla fighters. Frank James joined and other members of the gang included Jessie James Cole Younger and James Younger As well as attacking Union troops the Quantrill Raiders also robbed mail coaches, murdered supporters of Abraham Lincoln and persecuted communities in Missouri and Kansas that Quantrill considered to be anti-Confederate. The gang also gained a reputation for murdering members of the Union Army that the gang had taken prisoner. On 21st August, 1863, the Quantrill Raiders committed one of the worst atrocities of the Civil War when it attacked the town of Lawrence. During the raid Quantrill's gang killed 150 inhabitants and set fire to over 180 buildings. Frank James was with William Quantrill when he was killed in Kentucky in 1865.

Book Reviews The Life and Trial of Frank James Introduction: After the loss of most of the gang members in the Northfield, Minnesota robbery attempt, the outlaw gang reorganized with new members under Jesse James. Most of these new members were younger, too young to have been war participants. They were a different breed than their predecessors, even more murder-prone and far less trustworthy to others in the gang. There were murders within the group, deceit, deception, and deals made with the law. One deal resulted in the death of Jesse James April 3, 1882 at the hands of Bob Ford. Others ended up in prison due to the testimony of their comrades—Tucker Bassham's testimony sent Bill Ryan to prison; Dick Liddil's Clarence Hite. Frank James' life and freedom were in considerable peril during 1882 as too many people who knew him, his habits, and connections, had been compromised. His life, for all he knew, could be taken by a friend or family member just as his brother's had been, for a presumed 'dead or alive' bounty (No such offer was publicly made by the governor but was apparently understood—or negotiated—by the Fords who were immediately pardoned for the murder of Jesse James, after their convictions, by the governor).

The James Family See investigation of the James Farm at Business Case#22 Jesse Frank Dr. Reuben Samuel Zerelda Archie Samuel Rev. Robert Sallee James was a native of Kentucky, born on July 17, 1818. He was a college educated, God-fearing, soul saving Baptist minister. Zerelda Elizabeth Cole was born January 29, 1825 in Woodford County, Kentucky and was educated in a Catholic convent. Robert and Elizabeth were married on December 28, 1841 in Stamping Ground, Kentucky. In 1842, they ventured to Missouri and purchased a farm in Kearney, Clay Co, Missouri. The farm consisted of some acreage and a log cabin. Being from the south, they used slave labor to help build and run their farm. Robert and Elizabeth were the parents of four children: Alexander Franklin "Frank" James, Robert R James (who died shortly after birth), Jesse Woodson James and Susan Lavenia James.
Rev. Robert James was a pillar in their growing community, helping to establish two churches in Clay County, one church in Ray County and William Jewell College. Being a minister, he soon felt the calling to go to California and preach the gospel to the gold miners. On April 12, 1850, he departed from his farm, leaving Zerelda in charge, but shortly after reaching California, be was stricken with an ailment and died on August 18, 1850. His body was never returned home and he was buried in an unmarked grave in California.
On September 30, 1852, Zerelda married a neighboring farmer, named Benjamin Simms. He was a widower but was quite a bit older than Zerelda. It wasn’t long before it became evident that the marriage would not last. Benjamin was not very affectionate or patient with Zerelda’s children, often beating them. This would lead to violent outbursts from Zerelda. Before a divorce could be finalized, Benjamin was killed in a horse accident on January 2, 1854.

Thanksgiving: The National Day of Mourning
Text of 1970 Speech by Wampsutta, an Aquinnah Wampanoag Elder
Frank James (1923 - February 20, 2001) was known to the Wampanoag people as Wampsutta, In 1970, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts invited him to speak at Plymouth's annual Thanksgiving feast. When the text of Mr. James’ speech was revealed before dinner, Massachusetts "disinvited" him. Wampsutta refused to revise his speech and left the event. He went to the hill near the statue of the Massasoit, the Wampanoag leader during the Pilgrims' arrival in 1620. There, overlooking Plymouth Harbor and the replica of the Mayflower, Frank James recited the speech that Massachusetts Commonwealth had refused to hear:
"I speak to you as a man a Wampanoag Man. I am a proud man, proud of my ancestry, my accomplishments won by a strict parental direction ("You must succeed - your face is a different color in this small Cape Cod community!"). I am a product of poverty and discrimination from these two social and economic diseases. I, and my brothers and sisters, have painfully overcome, and to some extent we have earned the respect of our community. We are Indians first - but we are termed "good citizens." Sometimes we are arrogant but only because society has pressured us to be so.
"It is with mixed emotion that I stand here to share my thoughts. This is a time of celebration for you - celebrating an anniversary of a beginning for the white man in America. A time of looking back, of reflection. It is with a heavy heart that I look back upon what happened to my People.

By D. S. Hube That, and the Washington Post reports on how ACORN was just "playing along" with the sting artists who caught them on videotape. You knew that was coming, didn't you? You already know that the freelance sting artists who zapped ACORN are being and have been referred to as "racists" and puppets of conservative radio and Fox News. Now, ACORN is utilizing a tried and true (but not very successful) tactic: Explaining that they were just "playing along" with the "ridiculous scheme." I'm old enough to remember the famous (or infamous) Abscam sting of the early 1980s. One of the representatives who was convicted of taking bribes Richard Kelly famously (and hilariously) defended his illegal actions by claiming he was "undertaking his own investigation" and "spent part of the [bribe] money to maintain his cover." It didn't work. Kelly spent thirteen months in the federal pen.

Not since the days of the noted English highwayman Robin Hood and his merry men has an outlaw captured the imagination of the public, as the hard-riding, straight-shooting bank and train robbers, Frank and Jesse James and their bushwhacking band of outlaws. They are perhaps the most famous robbers of the old West, not excluding Kentucky. In Missouri their birthplace is a state monument, the only one for any outlaw. They gave the nation its first peacetime bank robbery and perfected train robbing, the first was on August 7, 1863. The Liberty, Missouri Tribune, a pro-Union newspaper, carried the following item: Robert S. James graduated from Georgetown College, having completed all requirements of the four-year classical course, on June 29, 1843. His degree was the Bachelor of Arts. According to faculty records, final examination for the senior class was taken on May 24, 1843. Robert is listed as having tied for third place honors in the class. For his accomplishment, he was awarded the opportunity to present an oration at the commencement exercises. All associates who knew him spoke of him as a kindly man of God. So convincing as a Minister one would remember his sermons the rest of their life. He was an educator, gifted orator, and a successful farmer.
