Although Frank was the first of the James brothers to ride off to war, he was also the first to tire of it. Lacking his brother Jesse's incessant need for attention, Frank chose to give up crime and live a quiet family life. Yet he would never truly know contentment until after his brother's death. Confederate Soldier
Alexander Franklin James was the first child born to Zerelda and Robert James. He arrived January 10, 1843, and grew up on his family's hemp farm in Clay County, Missouri. Clay County was one of only seven in the state where at least a quarter of the population was in chains, and, growing up, Frank absorbed his parents' pro-slavery ideology. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, the 18-year-old joined a militia company pledged to protect Missouri from any abolitionist invasion and, if necessary, fight for the Confederacy. That soon happened when the militia was placed under the control of former governor and Southern supporter Sterling Price. Price's troops defeated a Union army at the battle of Wilson's Creek, and for a brief time it looked as if they would capture control of Missouri. But the tide turned in September 1861 when the rebels had to withdraw in the face of a federal force led by John Fremont, and Price evacuated Missouri in February 1862. Meanwhile, Frank remained in Clay County; he had come down with measles, been captured by Union troops, and released after signing a loyalty oath.

Site Map Timeline Syllabus Special Offers ... Book Reviews The Life and Trial of Frank James Chapter 7 The seventh day of the trial: Frank Tutt testified: I reside at Kansas City. Prior to living there I lived at Lexington, Mo. I am a coal-oil inspector. I know Dick Liddell. I remember meeting him in front of Gardner's saloon at Kansas City just after the Ford boys had been pardoned, after the trial at St. Joe. Mr. James M. Crowder was present at the time. On that occasion Liddell, when asked where Frank James was, said he didn't know the whereabouts of Frank, and that he and Jesse didn't get along well together, and he hadn't seen him for years. Cross-examined: I had been pursuing the James boys for a couple of months, but never caught any of them. James S. Demastus testified for the defense, as follows: I reside in Richmond, Mo.; am a Justice of the Peace there. I remember the testimony of Mrs. Bolton at the Wood Hite inquest. I understood her to testify that she had not seen Frank James for about two years, and then at her father's. She was then living at the Harbison Place, and had been there about two years. Cross-examined: She named Wood Hite, Dick Liddell, Clarence Hite and Jesse James as members of the gang. The answer as to how long since she had seen Frank James was given in an examination conducted by Mr. Farris, a juror, after the formal examination, and as much for curiosity as anything else.

Alexander Frank James was born in Missouri, in Clay County. He was the older brother of the infamous Jesse James and the founding member of the James – Younger gang. Frank and his brothers were confederate sympathizers as the family owned slaves. In 1862, he joined William Quantrill and his band of guerillas and wreaked havoc on Union army troops as well as against Union sympathizers and supporters of Abraham Lincoln. Probably the most infamous act perpetrated by Frank James and Quantrill’s Raiders was the attack on Lawrence, Kansas where buildings were burned to the ground and many men, women and children were killed.
After the Civil War, he formed a gang that included his brother Jesse, Bob, Cole and James Younger, Clell Miller, Charlie Pitts and Bill Chadwell. They robbed banks and trains together and were quite good at it until they tried to rob a bank in Northfield Minnesota. A bank teller was shot and killed during the robbery and the townspeople took action. Chadwell, Miller and Pitts were killed, the Youngers were wounded and captured and the James boys were wounded but managed to escape. Together the gang had robbed more than twelve banks in various states. They also robbed about seven trains and at least four stagecoaches before the Northfield Minnesota raid occurred.
Feeling that he was next, Frank James turned himself in to authorities and was acquitted of a murder charge by a jury. After this, Frank went straight and went to work on the stage as well as joining a circus. He then eventually turned the family home into a museum and charged visitors money to see Jesse’s gravesite. Frank James eventually died on the family farm in 1915.
