Familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (codon 200 mutation) with supranuclear palsy
Article Abstract: A form of familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) characterized by supranuclear gaze palsy, or palsy affecting the eyes, may be caused by a mutation in the amyloid gene on chromosome 20. Familial CJD is an inherited disease of the brain characterized by progressive dementia and other neurological complications. A genetic analysis was done of two patients who died from CJD and nine healthy individuals at risk for CJD from a family with a history of CJD with supranuclear gaze palsy. Both of the patients who died and four at-risk individuals had an identical mutation in codon 200 of the amyloid gene on chromosome 20. Nine individuals from this family died after developing progressive dementia characteristic of CJD. Five individuals were diagnosed with supranuclear gaze palsy after an eye examination. author: Goldfarb, Lev G., Brown, Paul (American football coach), Bertoni, John M., Rubenstein, Richard, Gajdusek, D. Three sisters; one dilemma
Article Abstract: Dr Stella Anderson and her sisters Patricia Fraser and Hazel Matheson had surgery to remove healthy breasts, ovaries and wombs because females in their family have a one in two chance of carrying a cancer gene. Five of ten female relatives died from ovarian cancer in their aunts' generation and three women of their own generation had breast cancer. The Aberdeen Royal Hospital NHS Trust set up management programmes for the family. Gynaecological examinations are carried out annually from the age of 28. author: Hunt, Liz Publisher: Financial Times Ltd.
