Gell-Mann, Murray (1929-), a United States physicist. He developed the theory, published in 1964, that protons, neutrons, and other basic subatomic particles are themselves composed of smaller particles, which he called quarks. Evidence supporting this theory was discovered in later experiments by others, and in 1969 Gell-Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics. Gell-Mann was born in New York City. He was a precocious child and attended various schools for the gifted before entering college at age 15. He received his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1948 and his doctorate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. Gell-Mann taught at the University of Chicago, 1952-54, and at the California Institute of Technology, 1955-93. He became the director of physics at the Santa Fe Institute in 1993. Gell-Mann wrote The Quark and the Jaguar (1994).

Murray Gell-Mann Murray Gell-Mann is one of today’s most prominent scientists.  He is currently Distinguished Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute as well as the Robert Andrews Millikan Professor Emeritus at the California Institute of Technology, where he joined the faculty in 1955.  In 1969 he received the Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. He is the author of The Quark and the Jaguar , published in 1994, in which his ideas on simplicity and complexity are presented to a general readership.
Among his contributions to physics was the “eightfold way” scheme that brought order out of the chaos created by the discovery of some 100 kinds of particles in collisions involving atomic nuclei.  Gell-Mann subsequently found that all of those particles, including the neutron and proton, are composed of fundamental building blocks that he named “quarks,” with very unusual properties. That idea has since been fully confirmed by experiment.  The quarks are permanently confined by forces coming from the exchange of "gluons."  He and others later constructed the quantum field theory of quarks and gluons, called "quantum chromodynamics," which seems to account for all the nuclear particles and their strong interactions.
Professor Gell-Mann was a director of the J.D. and C.T. MacArthur Foundation from 1979 to 2002 and was a board member of the Wildlife Conservation Society from 1994 to 2006.  From 1974 to 1988, he was a Citizen Regent of the Smithsonian Institution.  He belongs to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Council on Foreign Relations; he is also a Foreign Member of the Royal Society of London.  He was on the U.S. President’s Science Advisory Committee from 1969 to 1972 and the President’s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology from 1994 to 2001.

Gell-Mann, Murray
(b . Sept. 15, 1929, New York City), American physicist, winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics for 1969 for his work pertaining to the classification of subatomic particles and their interactions. Having entered Yale University at the age of 15, Gell-Mann received his B.S. in physics in 1948 and his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. His doctoral research on subatomic particles was influential in the later work of the Nobel laureate (1963) Eugene P. Wigner. In 1952 Gell-Mann joined the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago. The following year he introduced the concept of "strangeness ," a quantum property that accounted for previously puzzling decay patterns of certain mesons. As defined by Gell-Mann, strangeness is conserved when any subatomic particle interacts via the strong force i.e., the force that binds the components of the atomic nucleus. In 1961 Gell-Mann and Yuval Ne'eman, an Israeli theoretical physicist, independently proposed a scheme for classifying previously discovered strongly interacting particles into a simple, orderly arrangement of families. Called the Eightfold Way (after Buddha's Eightfold Path to Enlightenment and bliss), the scheme grouped mesons and baryons (
