Mikhail Gorbachev
The last Soviet leader by Rit Nosotro First Published:: 2003
Gorbachev moved steadily up the political ranks. After being promoted to the regional committee of the Communist Youth League in 1961, he transferred to the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) where he served faithfully, working hard and catching the attention of regional first secretary. He continued to be promoted every two years or so because of his hard work and his connections with high ranking Soviet officials. He experimented with ways of improving worker efficiency and living conditions. In 1978 Gorbachev moved to Moscow to take up the position of Central Committee secretary, with the responsibility of caring for Soviet agriculture. 1979 found him a non-voting member of the famous Politburo, the top policy making body of the Soviet government. At the comparatively young age of 49, Gorbachev was promoted to full member of the Politburo, the youngest person to have that honor. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev
BY GEORGE J. CHURCH
Officials of the Zavorovo state farm near Moscow had prepared carefully for the big day last August. They had even built a special staircase to spare their distinguished visitor the indignity of climbing down a hill to the potato fields below the main road. Mikhail Gorbachev would have none of it. Stepping out of his ZIL limousine, he gave the staircase a dismissive wave and scrambled down the steep incline in his neatly pressed gray business suit, leaving his surprised entourage to run after him in full view of television cameras. At the bottom of the hill, Gorbachev asked the farmers, lined up beside their equipment like soldiers on parade, about the mood on the farm. "Good. Businesslike," came the replies. Gorbachev was not satisfied. "I always hear the same answer," he said. "[But] there are always problems." For example, he asked, was everything available "except for vodka," a teasing reference to his antialcoholism campaign. Well, no, one farmer mumbled. It was the season for making jams and jellies, and sugar was scarce. Gorbachev shot back: Do you know why? Moonshiners are buying up all the sugar to make home brew. "Let's talk straight with one another," said the leader. "Isn't it time to bring the making of moonshine to an end? That sort of people belong back in the times when the dinosaurs lived." European History - Mikhail Gorbachev
Expert: Sam Rutherford
Question Sam Rutherford, My name is Aubrey Richardson and I am an American student at Radford High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. My world history teacher, Gwyn Johnson, has tasked my class to write an extensive research paper on a world leader of our choice. I am sure it comes as no surprise that I have chosen the prevailing principal of perestroika, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev. Having lived and traveled throughout Europe for most of my life I have been able to see Mikhail Gorbachev's influence first hand. I recognize that you are an incredibly busy individual, however, I was wondering if you might loan your expertise to me and allow me to conduct a brief interview with you on my subject, Mikhail Gorbachev, via e-mail. It would be an immense honor to have someone as educated on Russian history as yourself be apart of my term paper process. If you would do me the honor you can contact me via email at bobber_brown@hotmail.com. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you.
