Harden, Sir Arthur
englischer Biochemiker, geboren 12.10.1865 Manchester, verstorben 17.6.1940 London; ab 1897 Leiter der chemischen Abteilung und seit 1905 Leiter der chemischen und biochemischen Abteilungen des Jenner Institute of Preventive Medicine (später Lister Institute) in London, ab 1912 Professor in London; entdeckte 1906 mit W.J. Young bei Untersuchungen der alkoholischen Gärung das Enzym Zymase (»Gärungsenzym«) und als Bestandteil der Hefeenzyme die Cozymase (frühere Bezeichnung Diphosphopyridinnucleotid oder Codehydrase I; heutige Bezeichnung NAD, Abkürzung für Nicotinamidadenindinucleotid) und fand die Bildung von Zuckerphosphaten (Zuckerphosphorylierung, z.B. zum Harden-Young-Ester = Fructose-1,6-diphosphat); erhielt 1929 zusammen mit H.K.A.S. von Euler- Chelpin den Nobelpreis für Chemie.
