Hemingway Hero
Ernest Hemingway Ernest Miller Heminway , the second of six children, was born on July 21, 1899 at his grandfather’s house in Oak Park, Chicago. His family then moved to Bear Lake , where he spent his first years. It was here that he caught his first fish at the age of three. At the age of six, his granfather died, leaving the family the large home where Ernest was born. It was here, in Oak Park, that Ernest grew up. His father taught him all about nature and the out doors, some of his teachings included; how to build fires, how to cook in the open, how to use an axe, and how to make bullets. Physical endurance and courage were also highly valued characteristics. This kind of up-brining is likely where Hemingway got the charateristics for the famed ‘Hemingway Hero.’ The so called ‘Hemingway Hero’ is the foundation for the main charater in all of Hemingway’s stories. The ‘Hemingway Hero’ is always a man, more so, he is a rough, woodsy type; a real man’s-man. He drinks, he hunts, and he acts first then asks questions later. He goes from one woman to another,
, and women are good for little more than reproduction. (Shoemaker) He has hopes, dreams, convictions and beliefes which he strictly follows, but he does not talk about them. This is one great example of the ‘Hemingway Hero’ being a man: “How much did you suffer?” “Plenty,” replied the old man.” (

His youth
His childhood
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21 st And later: Nick was very grateful to him for two things; fishing and shooting. His father was as sound on those two things as he was unsound on sex, for instance, and Nick was glad that it had been that way; for some one has to give you your first gun or the opportunity to get it and use it(...) he loved to fish and to shoot exactly as much as when he first had gone with his father. It was a passion that had never slackened and he was very grateful to his father for bringing him to know it.
First job and military service
th In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels. Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees. The trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops, arching along the road and the dust rising and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves............

Hemingway, Ernest Miller Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), born in Oak Park, Illinois, started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City at the age of seventeen. Before the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was wounded, was decorated by the Italian Government, and spent considerable time in hospitals. After his return to the United States, he became a reporter for Canadian and American newspapers and was soon sent back to Europe to cover such events as the Greek Revolution.
During the twenties, Hemingway became a member of the group of expatriate Americans in Paris, which he described in his first important work, The Sun Also Rises (1926). Equally successful was A Farewell to Arms (1929), the study of an American ambulance officer's disillusionment in the war and his role as a deserter. Hemingway used his experiences as a reporter during the civil war in Spain as the background for his most ambitious novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940). Among his later works, the most outstanding is the short novel, The Old Man and the Sea (1952), the story of an old fisherman's journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat. Hemingway - himself a great sportsman - liked to portray soldiers, hunters, bullfighters - tough, at times primitive people whose courage and honesty are set against the brutal ways of modern society, and who in this confrontation lose hope and faith. His straightforward prose, his spare dialogue, and his predilection for understatement are particularly effective in his short stories, some of which are collected in Men Without Women (1927) and The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories (1938). Hemingway died in Idaho in 1961.

Biography
Hemingway is one of the most important authors of the 1920's. A lot of his works were based on real-life experiences as an ambulance driver and a hunter. In A Fare Well to Arms, the main character in an ambulance driver that has similar (but more exiting) experiences then Hemingway did. His style is considered to have emotional understatement, laconic dialogue, and crispness. A lot of his writing deals with an inner conflict against circumstances. Hemingway was one of the "lost generation" of authors, who left the U.S. and write their books on other cities. After World War One, Hemingway moved to Paris to write instead of returning home. In 1924, he published his first major work, In our Time . In 1926, he was made famous by The Sun Also Rises and gained publicity. Other important books are A Farewell to Arms, Death in the Afternoon, The Have and the Have Not, The Old Man and the Sea, and For Whom the Bell Tolls His books errand him the Pulitzer Prize in 1953, and the Noble Prize in 1954. Ernest Hemingway died in 1961.
A Farewell to Arms
A Farewell to Arms is one of the most important books from the post world war one era. It was published in 1929, ten years after the end of the war.
