Article Abstract: A variety of physical, biophysical, chemical phenomena can be investigated using single-molecule spectroscopy (SMS). Research demonstrates that the SMS theory is a complementary field of research to describe optical spectroscopy in a condensed phase.

Symposium honors Herschbach
Dudley R. Herschbach, Frank B Baird Jr. Professor of Science and winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, is turning 70. To celebrate the momentous event, a symposium will be held in Science Center C on Saturday (Sept. 21) and Sunday (Sept. 22). Speakers at the symposium, "New Frontiers in Chemical Physics Symposium," include Hal Johnston, Norman Ramsey, Yuan T. Lee, and Richard Zare. President Lawrence H. Summers will make the welcoming remarks. The symposium is free and open to the public. It begins at 8:30 a.m. Biomedical research exhibit at HMS
The 2002 Biomedical Research Equipment and Supplies Exhibit, featuring 150 biomedical suppliers and vendors, will be held Sept. 25-26 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Countway Plaza Courtyard, Harvard Medical School. Admission is free with a University, hospital, or corporate ID.

Dudley Robert Herschbach (born June 18, 1932) is an American chemist at Harvard University . He won the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry jointly with Yuan T. Lee and John C. Polanyi "for their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes." Herschbach and Lee specifically worked with molecular beams, performing so-called " crossed molecular beam " experiments that enabled a detailed molecular-level understanding of many elementary reaction processes.
