Convolutional Neural Networks
Introduction
The forward neural network model can be extended using constraints of specific applications. One extension is the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) - that uses only local connections and shared weights. Translation invariance is a property that results from those constraints, what is very useful on image and signal processing. For instance the CNN can be used for postal code recognition [LeCun 1990] and phoneme recognition [Waibel 1989]. This article shows the elements of CNN, and a basic application in image processing - edge detection (just like a "hello world" application for CNN).
Translation Invariance
Edge Detection
Edge detection is the process to find the limit between the dark and bright pixels in an image. There are many approaches to this problems. Here we present a neural network learning approach, giving to the neural network a sample of input and output images desired: Input Image Output Image (edge detection) A full connected neural network is not a good approach because the number of connections is too big, and it is hard coded to only one image size. At the learning stage, we should present the same image with shifts otherwise the edge detection would happen only in one position (what was useless). Exploring properties of this application we assume:
  • Translation invariance Local information processing
The edge detection should work the same way anywhere the input image is placed. This class of problem is called Translation Invariant Problem.

    Research
The Hubel and Wiesel experiments greatly expanded the scientific knowledge of sensory processing. In one experiment, done in 1959, they inserted a microelectrode into the primary visual cortex of an anesthetized cat. They then projected patterns of light and dark on a screen in front of the cat. They found that some neurons fired rapidly when presented with lines at one angle, while others responded best to another angle. Some of these neurons responded differently to light patterns than to dark patterns. Hubel and Wiesel called these neurons "simple cells."

    What is it ?
This package provides a library with a set of functions that model the behavior of LGN in the process of vision. This is inspired by Hubel, David H. ... lgn2v1-user-settings.h file. The documentation of the library is provided by a set of commented examples, that should be read in the following order :
    What it does
We show here some computations performed by the library, from the following source image:
All other images presented here are generated directly from the library, or from some computation presented in the examples.
    Receptive fields
The main specificity of the library, compared with traditional image filtering, is the ability to manage the different spatial scales of filters involved in LGN processes. Vision is actually accurate at the center, and more "fuzzy" at the periphery. That means that filters with small spatial dimension have to be used to analyze the center of the image, and that progressive higher filter spatial dimensions have to be used as we get to the periphery of the picture. The problem is then to determine the centers of the filters on the image, and according to this, the spatial extension of the filters. To do so, an arbitrary (and parameterizable) radial decaying density function over the image is used by the library. The idea consists of building over the image some neighboring squared surfaces. The property of these surfaces is that the integral of the density over each one is the same. As the density function is weak on the periphery of the image, squares have to be larger to keep this integral constant. These squares, calculates from a Gaussian density function, are shown on the following picture, for the right part of the image.
