Nobel Peace Prize Shock Intervention Alters Betting Odds Saturday 02 October 2010 at 09:24
The normally peaceful Nobel Peace Prize Awards were thrown into betting confusion after a reported intervention by a Chinese government official.
The director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute says a high-ranking Chinese official has warned him that giving the peace prize this year to a Chinese dissident would harm relations between Norway and China.
The favourite at 6/1 with Paddy Power is Liu Xiaobo, the Chinese human rights activist who is currently languishing in jail for his support of political reform in China. Liu Xiaobo was sentenced to eleven years and winning the Nobel Peace Prize would highlight his and the Charter08 struggle for reform.
If the Norwegians do buckle under the alleged pressure then maybe Morgan Tsvangirai the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe at odds of 8/1 with Paddy Power may well be the beneficiary. He has been the main opposition to President Robert Mugabe and has tried to orchestrate change within Zimbabwe. He has received little support from other African leaders but has not been diverted and continues to oppose the Mugabe regime.
Paddy Power
quote twenty individuals and organisations in their Nobel Peace Prize betting including former world leaders Bill Clinton at 18/1 and Tony Blair at 80/1. One price that may be too big with

Nobel Peace Prize
"Wangari Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. She was a controversial choice since she is known more as an environmentalist and a tree planter than as a peace activist. ""This year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has evidently broadened its definition of peace still further... Environmental protection has become yet another path to peace"... "...[She is] the first African woman to receive this prize... in her acceptance speech... [she] asked for the release of fellow Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest in Burma... "Maathai launched the Green Belt Movement in the 1970s and mobilized Kenyan women to plant trees throughout the country... "She completed her doctorate in veterinary anatomy from the University of Nairobi in 1971, becoming the first East African woman to get a Ph.D., and she taught microanatomy at the university... What is the significance of the Nobel Committee expanding the definition of peace? ""You cannot have security by putting borders around yourself. You cannot be secure by using your power to control resources and deciding that you can't share them with the rest of the world. You will not realize peace that way. You will have conflict"" (Amitabh Pal. "Wangari Maathai." The Progressive , May 2005: 35-39).

Nobel Prize in Literature
The Nobel Prize in Literature Swedish Nobelpriset i litteratur ) is awarded annually, since 1901, to an author from any country who has, in the words from the will of Alfred Nobel , produced "the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency" (original Swedish: den som inom litteraturen har producerat det utmärktaste i idealisk riktning The "work" in this case refers to an author's work as a whole, though individual works are sometimes also cited. The Swedish Academy decides who, if anyone, will receive the prize in any given year and announces the name of the chosen laureate in early October. Nobel's choice of emphasis on "idealistic" or "ideal" (in English translation) in his criteria for the Nobel Prize in Literature has led to recurrent controversy. (In the original Swedish, the word idealisk can be translated as either "idealistic" or "ideal".

Nobel Peace Prize Concert
Each year on the date of death of Alfred Nobel , December 10th, the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony takes place in The City Hall of Oslo Norway . The Nobel Peace Prize Concert is held the day after the award ceremony, in the Oslo Spektrum Arena, with the winner and prominent guests attending. The arena takes approximately 6.500-7.000 guests and the concert is broadcast to over 100 countries. The first Nobel Peace Prize Concert was held in . The concert has been held every year since and features a wide range of international stars of different music genres, with the exception of when a classical concert was held instead. Several edited editions of the concert are made, with different lengths and different content, for various countries. The concert has been criticised for featuring artists and hosts based on their stardom rather than their representativeness of the Peace Prize idea. This has been countered by opinions such as one should of course celebrate the prize winners and that the international stars will create attention towards the prize and winner from people who normally might not take that much notice. The hosts give descriptions of the winner's work, an interview of the winner is shown and the winner gives a speech during the concert.

I received my PhD from the University of Florida in May 2009. My doctoral dissertation is on Aristotelian naturalism. My teaching and research interests are chiefly in ethical theory. Specifically, I am interested in issues pertaining to moral psychology and motivation in both Kantian and Aristotelian ethical theory. I am also interested in the implications of ethics for political theory, as I believe that one cannot consider ethical issues without eventually being led to examine the implications of these considerations for life within a wider political community.
I have also been practicing and teaching yoga for a few years. I feel that yoga practice provides a powerful tool to help me internalize and put into practice many insights I have obtained from my ethical ponderings, leading to greater harmony between my intellectual and practical lives.

Author says terrorists crave power
Nobel Prize winner reflects on extremists in wake of Sept. 11 By LISA KIM BACH REVIEW-JOURNAL On Sept. 11, Nobel Prize-winning Nigerian author Wole Soyinka was in the air over the Atlantic Ocean. After the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon prompted the grounding of all flights in and into the United States, Soyinka landed at the unlikely destination of Cardiff, capital of Wales, where he would spend the better part of a week. It was there that he began piecing together his reflections on faith, rights and terror, which became the theme for a presentation made at UNLV Monday night to an audience of about 120 people. "The ultimate goal of these protagonists is not spiritual elevation," said Soyinka, speaking to the motivation of terrorists. "It is the craving for power, the desire to become the overseers of submission."
