The often-heard term International Red Cross is actually a misnomer, as no official organization as such exists bearing that name. • International humanitarian law asserts that children's rights must be respected during armed conflict but children are often torn from their families, pressed into serving as soldiers, held in captivity or simply killed.
The ICRC tries to ensure children in war have adequate access to medical care, food and water, and, when possible, reunites them with their families.
It also campaigns against the recruitment of child soldiers and reminds all parties to conflict of their obligations towards children.

    Proposal for a new symbol
image by Nicolas Deprez , 13 September 2005 As per the daily Swiss paper "24 Heures" of yesterday the International Committee of the Red Cross is planning a new flag. This new one is to avoid distinction between Christians and Muslims. As you can see, the project is very simple for everyone and without any distinctive religious items.
Nicolas Deprez , 13 September 2005 I believe this has been under discussion for some time- at least five years. It's more often referred to as the Red Diamond.

Another picture shows a similar emblem painted on the white wall on the hospital of Keysaney, Somalia.

While there are improvements in the security situation, armed violence, including bomb attacks and military operations continue to kill a large number of civilians in Iraq. Despite the efforts of the Iraqi authorities to provide basic services, the humanitarian situation remains worrying and access to essential services such as clean water and adequate health care is still limited. The ICRC continues to help displaced persons and residents, to provide hospitals with medical supplies and equipment and to support vital water infrastructure, health facilities and physical rehabilitation centres. The ICRC continues to help displaced people and residents and to support and rehabilitate vital water infrastructure, health facilities and physical rehabilitation centres. It also conducts training in the clinical management of emergency for health staff working in hospitals. Visiting people detained by the Iraqi government, the US forces in Iraq and the Kurdistan regional authorities remains a top priority for the ICRC, as does the restoration and maintaining of links between members of families separated by years of armed conflict.

    ICRC to Visit Saddam Hussein
The American Red Cross has received criticism regarding the decision of the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit Saddam Hussein. Visiting detainees is a unique function of the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which acts as an independent guardian of the Geneva Conventions . No other entity within the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, including the American Red Cross, has that role or performs that function. The Geneva Conventions , which apply to all armed conflicts, require that all captured combatants or prisoners of war (POWs) be visited by the ICRC to help assure the world that their treatment is humane. For example, the ICRC visited the three American servicemen held in a Serbian prison during the Kosovo conflict and arranged for them to send messages to their families back home. During the Gulf War, the ICRC met with 55 U.S. POWs as well as POWs from the UK, France, Germany and Italy. Under humanitarian law, the ICRC talks with prisoners in private to discuss their treatment, to register them so their families and their government know where they are, and to give them the opportunity to write personal Red Cross Messages to their relatives. If there are any concerns that arise in the course of a visit, the ICRC will discuss them directly and confidentially with the detaining authorities only. The ICRC does not publicly discuss its findings, nor share confidential matters with other parts of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Doc. 9388 20 March 2002 Activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Report Committee on Migration, Refugees and Demography Rapporteur: Mr Leonid Slutsky, Russia, Socialist Group Summary The report takes a brief look at some of the major events which have marked the International Committee of the Red Cross' (ICRC) humanitarian work worldwide, and in particular in Europe, between 1996 and 2001. It also gives an account of the ICRC's contribution to the promotion and development of international humanitarian law. The report strongly supports the ICRC's proposal to elaborate an additional protocol on explosive remnants of war to the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, its activities towards the establishment of an International Criminal Court, as well as the urgent need to strengthen the protection of the ICRC's and other humanitarian personnel. The report does not try to give an exhaustive account of all the achievements of the ICRC: it focuses on main developments and tendencies. I. Draft resolution
