From the obituary by James Chadwick in Nature, 177, 964 (1956):
beautiful discovery of artificial radioactivity . An interesting feature of this discovery is that it was so long in coming; for the phenomenon of artificial activity had been expected, and sought for, since the earliest days of radioactivity. For this discovery the Joliot-Curies were awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935. "About two years later ... with P. Discovered , but did not fully identify, the radioactive isotope of lanthanum with half-life of 3.5 hours which is a fission product of neutron bombardment of uranium (with P. Savitch).

Irene Joliot-Curie
Irene was the daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie. She carried on her parents' research into radioactivity, first helping to establish the use of x-rays to diagnose injuries on the battlefield in World War I. Irene began working at her mother's Radium Institute in 1921. She married Frederic Joliot, a pupil of her mother's, in 1926. They both took the name Joliot-Curie. Together, the two physicists discovered artificial radioactivity. Their experiments found that certain elements became radioactive themselves after being exposed to radioactivity. Irene and Frederic were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935. Irene became a professor at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1937 and in 1946 was made director of the Radium Institute. Frederic Joliot-Curie and Irene Joliot-Curie were both French scientists. Husband and wife, they were jointly awarded Nobel laureates in 1935 for their joint discovery of new radioactive isotopes which they prepared artificially. They are also known for their contribution towards the discovery of the neutron.
Irene Joliot-Curie
Irene Curie was born in Paris to Pierre and Marie Curie on 12th November, 1897. Both of her parents were Nobel Prize winning scientists. In order to finish her Baccalaureate, Irene joined the Faculty of Science in Sorbonne. However, her studies were put on hold during World War I during which she helped her mother as an assistant radiographer at the tender age of 18. After fulfilling her duties she joined The Radium Institute in Paris where she became a Doctor of Science in 1925.
Frederic Joliot was also born in Paris on 19th March, 1900. He graduated from the School of Chemistry and Physics of the city of Paris. In 1925, he began assisting Marie Curie at the Radium Institute. It was there that he met Irene Curie, daughter of Marie Curie and eventually married her in 1926. Both, Frederic and Irene changed their last names to Joliot-Curie. This marked the start of one of the most significant partnerships in the field of chemistry.
Research in the field of nuclear physics
They conducted experiments which involved bombarding boron with alpha particles which lead to a radioactive form of nitrogen. They also produced radioactive isotopes of phosphorous from aluminium.
