KENDREW sir JOHN COWDERY
Biochimiste britannique né le 24 mars 1917 à Oxford et mort le 23 août 1997 à Cambridge, sir John Cowdery Kendrew effectue des études de chimie à l'université de Cambridge puis, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, travaille dans un centre de recherche du ministère de la guerre à la mise au point du radar. Après la guerre, il revient à Cambridge, où il rencontre Max Ferdinand Perutz, qui deviendra un très proche collègue.     Sir John C. Kendrew est né le 24 mars 1917, à Oxford; son père était climatologiste, et sa mère historienne de l'art. Il fit ses études successivement au Dragon School d'Oxford de 1923 à 1930, au Clifton College de Bristol de 1930 à 1936, puis au Trinity College de Cambridge. Licencié en chimie en 1939, il est mobilisé dès le début de la guerre dans un service technique, comme membre du centre de recherche du Ministère de l'Air, où il travaille à la mise au point du radar. Il a occupé ensuite des postes importants auprès de l'Etat-Major de la R.A.F., ce qui lui a valu la Wing Comrnander R.A.F. Après la guerre, il revient à Cambridge, au Laboratoire Cavendish, et décide d'entreprendre des recherches sur la structure des protéines. C'est à cette époque qu'il commence à travailler en collaboration avec Max Perutz , sous la direction de Sir Laurence Bragg. Il soutient son Ph. D. en 1949 et son Sc. D. en 1952. Pendant de longues années ses recherches sont subventionnées par plusieurs organismes, comme le Davy-Faraday Laboratory of the Royal Institution ou la Royal Society. Il devient, à partir de 1960, conseiller scientifique à mi-temps au Ministère de la Défense. Il est le fondateur et le rédacteur en chef du célèbre Journal of Molecular Biology.
