Kilby , Jack S. The Nobel Committee has asked me to discuss my life story, so I guess I should begin at the beginning. I was born in 1923 in Great Bend, Kansas, which got its name because the town was built at the spot where the Arkansas River bends in the middle of the state. I grew up among the industrious descendents of the western settlers of the American Great Plains. My father ran a small electric company that had customers scattered across the rural western part of Kansas. While I was in high school, a huge ice storm knocked down most of the poles that carried the telephone and electric power lines. My father worked with amateur radio operators to communicate with areas where customers had lost their power and phone service. My dad's goal was to do whatever it took to run his business and to help people, but I thought that amateur radio was a fascinating subject. It sparked my interest in electronics, and that's when I decided that this field was something I wanted to pursue. I also was a fan of broadcast radio. In the 1940s, I especially enjoyed listening to Big Band music. Even today, there's a radio station in Dallas that plays this kind of music, and with a little luck, I don't have to listen to much else.

"Got Toxic Milk" "Got Toxic Milk?" Reconsidered ... July Biosecurity / Fusion Reactor / Chip History Earlier this summer, a scientific journal stopped publication of a paper on the safety of the nation's milk supply at the government's request. Officials at the Department of Homeland Security were concerned that information in the paper could be useful to people plotting acts of terrorism. This week, the paper was finally published, after a more extensive review process. Bruce Alberts, President of the National Academy of Sciences, wrote that "we can detect no other information in this article important for a terrorist that is not already immediately available to anyone who has access to information from the World Wide Web." In this hour, Ira talks with one of the paper's authors about his findings, and about the dividing line between science and security.

Texas Instruments Cal-Tech - World's First Pocket Electronic Calculator
TI President Pat Haggerty remembered the success his company had with another of their new products, the transistor, when TI developed a new consumer device to showcase its use - the transistor radio. So in 1965 Haggerty directed a crack Texas Instrument engineering team to embark on a project that was the turning point for electronic calculators. TI Lab Director Jack Kilby, two colleagues, Jerry Merryman, and James Van Tassel, and a few other staff members began work on a hand-held calculator. Kilby had in fact invented the integrated circuit at TI in 1958. The three engineers envisioned building an IC-based, battery-powered "miniature calculator" that could add, subtract, multiply, and divide, yet still fit in the palm of your hand. After two years of development, they completed the first hand-held calculator in 1967. The battery-powered device could accept six-digit numbers, perform the four basic arithmetic functions, and print results as large as 12 digits on a thermal printer. Code-named the "Cal-Tech," the calculator measured about 4.25 by 6.15 by 1.75 inches and weighed 45 ounces. Laid out in discrete components (transistors, resistors, etc.), the electronics within the device filled a large lab bench top. Thanks to the ingenuity of the TI team, most of the components were integrated into just four ICs. In 1974, the team was awarded with the patent.

Goodbye Jack Kilby
Jack S. Kilby , modern inventor extraordinary, died Monday. Just by reading this post, I know that you are using a whole collection of products based on one of Kilby's inventions. When you use your computer, your cell phone or talk on the landline, when you play your favorite electronic music or electronic game, when you drive any modern car or fly in any passenger plane now in service, when you have an x-ray or a blood workup as part of a physical exam and even when you camp in the woods (provided you take along a GPS navigator or a radio) you are using Kilby's most famous invention. In case you don't know, Jack S. Kilby invented the integrated circuit. Although he always saw himself as an engineer, he received a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000. I never met Kilby, but I have made a comfortable living off his one invention. And so have millions of other people. The New York Times Obituary tells only the controversy between Texas Instruments and Fairchild Semiconductor, and ultimately Kilby and Noyce, over a follow-on invention, In 1959 Mr. Kilby and Dr. Noyce, then with Fairchild Semiconductor, were named as inventors in their companies' applications for patents for the integrated circuit. After years of legal battles, Fairchild and Texas Instruments decided to cross-license their technologies, ultimately creating a world information industries market now worth more than $1 trillion annually. Dr. Noyce died in 1990.

IEEE Members Who Received the Nobel Prize for Physics
The year 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded one half to Jack S. Kilby "for his part in the invention of the integrated circuit," and one half jointly to Herber Kroemer and Zhores I. Alferov for "developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics." Both Jack Kilby and Herbert Kroemer are members of the Electron Devices Society, while Zhores Alferov is a member of LEOS. Their work was recognized for providing the foundation for modern information technology. Not only do we want to congratulate our colleagues for this recognition of their contributions, but this award also recognizes the impact that the electron devices of our Society have made to information technology. This award was made for invention rather than a discovery in physics. The three biographies of the Nobel recipients have been written by close colleagues. Jim Merz was recruited by Herb Kroemer to come to the University of California at Santa Barbara. Willis Adcock was Jack Kilby's supervisor at TI when he demonstrated his integrated circuit. Nick Holonyak and Zhores Alferov have visited and worked with each other for many years.
