Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta Georgia on 15th January, 1929. Both his father and grandfather were Baptist preachers who had been actively involved in the civil rights movement. King graduated from Morehouse College in 1948. After considering careers in medicine and law, he entered the ministry. While studying at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania , King heard a lecture on Mahatma Gandhi and the nonviolent civil disobedience campaign that he used successfully against British rule in India. Over the next few months King read several books on the ideas of Gandhi, and eventually became convinced that the same methods could be employed by blacks to obtain civil rights in America. He was particularly struck by Gandhi's words: "Through our pain we will make them see their injustice". King was also influenced by Henry David Thoreau and his theories on how to use nonviolent resistance to achieve social change.
After his marriage to Coretta Scott , King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery Alabama . In Montgomery, like most towns in the

King, Martin Luther Jr.
King is internationally known for the role that he played in the civil rights struggle in the USA. There is a definite parallel when his actions are compared to that of Ghandi in South Africa early in the previous century - his policy of non-violent protest (In 1959 he visited India with a view to understand Gandhi's principle of non-violent persuasion, called satyagraha). He rose to fame during a decade of great achievement - 1957 to 1968. Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta on 15 January 1929, one of three children of Martin Luther King Sr. King's father was the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church and his mother was a former schoolteacher. He attended the local grammar and high schools and, on completion, enrolled in Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1944. King had no intention of following in his dad's footsteps but after having met with Dr. Benjamin Mays, changed his mind. He acquired the bachelor's degree in 1948 and moved on to the Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania. He won the Plafker Award as the most promising student of the graduating class as well as the J. Lewis Crozer Fellowship. King gained his doctorate in 1955. He got married to Coretta Scott, a music student of Alabama. They were married in 1953 during the years leading to his doctorate. On completion of his studies King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, where he initiated his first move on the civil-rights movement. He got the black community to stage a 382-day boycott of the city's bus services. The boycott lasted for more than a year, demonstrating a new spirit of protest among Southern black community. Eventually the United States Supreme Court declared bus segregation to be unconstitutional. King was the founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference which was established following a meeting of a number of black civil-rights leaders in 1957. He became a national hero who protested as President of the SCLC and organised others to act against discrimination. He made a trip to India and returned to the United States in 1960 to become his father's co-pastor at the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

From small-time criminal to notorious assassin
Will James Earl Ray's story ever be fully told?
April 4, 1998 Web posted at: 9:29 a.m. EST (1429 GMT) NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) James Earl Ray may be the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s convicted assassin, but questions of a possible conspiracy still linger. Despite repeated claims of innocence, Ray has never been able to provide hard evidence that he was used as a pawn in a conspiracy plot to kill the civil rights leader. Now 70 years old and seriously ill with cirrhosis of the liver, Ray has spent the past 29 years trying to clear his name. Not even members of King's family have been able to persuade a judge to allow a trial. As Ray's health worsens, many believe the truth will never be found. Last month, Ray's lawyer, William Pepper, said he would not appeal a Tennessee court order disqualifying a judge who had made rulings favorable to Ray. He said an appeal would tax Ray's poor health, with little chance of success. King's widow called for a national commission to investigate her husband's assassination Thursday, two days before the 30th anniversary of his slaying.

Martin Luther King Jr.
January 15th, 1929 - April 3rd, 1968
Each year on the third Monday in January, we observe the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, King was raised by his parents to treat others with respect, no matter their color. As he grew older he began to realize whites and blacks were treated differently in, and by, society. His ultimate goal was to change that fact.
Educated Leader
King attended the Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania and studied important historical figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Henry David Thoreau. At college he met Coretta Scott, who he would later marry. In 1954, at age 25, King received his PhD and was thereafter known as Dr. King. After receiving his PhD, he became a pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1957 he became president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1959 he went to India with his wife and studied, in great detail, Satyagraha
