Kusch, Polykarp
(Blankenburg, Allemagne, 1911 — Dallas, Texas, 1993)
Physicien américain. Après avoir étudié auprès du physicien Isidore Rabi , en 1937, l'effet des champs magnétiques sur les flux d'atomes, à l'université Columbia (New York), il travaille, durant la guerre, sur les radars dans les laboratoires de Westinghouse et de Bell Telephone. Nommé professeur, en 1946, à l'université Columbia, dont il préside à deux reprises le département de physique (1949-1952, puis 1960-1963), il obtient, en 1955, le prix Nobel de physique pour ses travaux sur le «moment magnétique de l'électron», qui firent de lui un pionnier de l'électrodynamique quantique. A partir de 1972, il enseigna à l'université de Dallas.
