Langmuir's talk on Pathological Science (December 18, 1953)
Background A recent book, Voodoo Science by Robert Parks (Oxford, 2000) led us to the realization that the most seminal exposition on the topic, a talk on Pathological Science by Irving Langmuir is not available on the web and we set out to rectify this omission. Irving Langmuir (1881-1957) was born in Brooklyn, NY. After studies in Physical Chemistry he spent most of his career in the research laboratories of General Electric. He won the Nobel prize for Chemistry in 1932. He gave his famous talk at the GE research labs four years before his death. The text displayed in this site was obtained from a transcription of the talk made by R.N.Hall and distributed by General Electric Laboratories as report No. 68-C-035 in April 1968. The printed report was scanned at 300dpi with an HP flatbed scanner and the resulting images were processed by the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software CuneiForm99. The results were edited in order to correct the few OCR errors, restore formatting information (such as underlines) that is lost during OCR, and conversion to a format appropriate for web display. No changes other than formatting have been made intentionally. A few comments that were added are marked in green . The notation (p.N)

Biography
Irving Langmuir was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 31, 1881, as the third of four sons of Charles Langmuir and Sadie, Comings. His early education was obtained in various schools and institutes in the USA, and in Paris (1892-1895). He graduated as a metallurgical engineer from the School of Mines at Columbia University in 1903. Postgraduate work in Physical Chemistry under Nernst
Returning to America, Dr. Langmuir became Instructor in Chemistry at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey, where he taught until July 1909. He then entered the Research Laboratory of the General Electric Company at Schenectady where he eventually became Associate Director.
Langmuir's studies embraced chemistry, physics, and engineering and were largely the outgrowth of studies of vacuum phenomena. In seeking the atomic and molecular mechanisms of these he investigated the properties of adsorbed films and the nature of electric discharges in high vacuum and in certain gases at low pressures.

The metaphor could be applied to Whitney's own career. There surely was never a builder more stimulated by the problems of his craft. As the "father of basic research in industry," Whitney was living proof of the fact that the essential qualities that mark the great builders are the same wherever the "bridges" may happen to be built.
Whitney circa 1890, as a young MIT faculty member.
As Whitney remarked later, his decision to make research in industry his career was prompted by "a desire to take part in more extensive research than could be accomplished by my personal efforts alone. I would have been glad to have been one of a large group of cooperators in colloid research [in academic life] but the greater rate of possible accomplishment in industry decided the case for me."

Irving Rubin ) was the chairman of the militant Jewish Defense League from through 2002.
His followers view him as an outspoken Jew who confronted anti-Semites directly, with the intent of demonstrating that he would not silently countenance anti-Semitism. Many critics denounced him as a terrorist. In reference to the 1985 death of Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) official Alex Odeh, JDL chairman Irv Rubin said Odeh "got what he deserved." However, the organization has insisted the attack was committed by others, The FBI has never been able to prove its original allegations against the JDL, given that the original suspects in the case fled to Israel. The crime remains unsolved. On December 12 Irv Rubin , JDL Chairman, and Earl Krugel, a member of the organization, were charged with conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism . The two were allegedly caught in the act of planning bomb attacks against the King Fahd Mosque in Culver City, California
