The Red Cross in a Changing World
To this hall tonight have been invited men and women representative of the four corners of our world. Each person present has rendered some service to the cause of peace. Such an undertaking imposes humility and suggests that we speak simply to this world forum about the common purpose that concerns us all. Goodwill is often inarticulate. Fortunately, we are blessed with individuals and organizations to express the longings of little peoples in all lands. The gift of great and continuing institutions is a splendid gift. We are "inheritors of a tradition", and in our hands is responsibility that the lustre does not dim, nor the shadow shrink.

Altruistic States? The Institutionalization of Development Aid Ideas in the League of Nations Unformatted Document Text:

the leaders of other powerful states had no objections to the inclusion of these ideas in the Covenant. As a result, these ideas were successfully and fully institutionalized into the Covenant. Henry Davison, representing initially the American Red Cross and later the League of Red Cross Societies, brought the idea of including health care in general and the Red Cross in particular in the Covenant to powerful individuals in the American government. Davison left his job as a banker at JP Morgan in New York in 1917 to become president of the American Red Cross War Council. By the fall of 1917, Davison began to think about what the role of the Red Cross ought to be after the war. In late November 1918, Davison wrote to Harvey Gibson, American Red Cross Commissioner for Europe, linking the idea of an international Red Cross with the League of Nations: I have a feeling that if there is anything whatever in the question of League of Nations
there is a common ground in the Red Cross which would bring together all the nations

Alleviating suffering, in war and in peace
The vision of humane society caring for in need, regardless of race, colour of creed first took form in the mind of Henri Dunant more than 125 years ago. Dunant was 31 when he came upon the scene of a great battle while travelling through Italy. It was the battle of Solferino. The Slaughter, the suffering and anguish of the wounded and maimed, the sorry plight of prisoners of war moved Dunant deeply. Finding a lack of medical assistance, he set to work with the help of village women and children. Some, when faced with wounded enemy soldiers, were reluctant to help. But Dunant implored them, saying in Italian "tutti fratteli", which means "all men are brothers". Three years later, Dunant published his famous book "A Memory of Solferino". In this, he asked if it was not possible to form a voluntary society to care for the victims of war. His idea spread throughout Europe and quickly gained the support of some prominent Swiss citizens. This was the famous "Committee of Five", the founders of the Red Cross who later formed the International Committee of the Red Cross. Although the Red Cross was born out of the anguish and suffering of war, it was soon realised that such a movement could also play an equally important role in times of peace.
Serving around the world
Soon after World War 1, the league of Red Cross Societies was formed in Paris to assist in the improvement of health, prevention of disease, and relief from suffering in peace and in war.
