Subproject Gerontobiology Title of research Analisis of the functional significance and mechanism of action of nerve growth factor Keywords NGF Brain aging Alcoholism Rheumatoid arthritis Aims Role of Nerve Growth Factor on cell of the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. Scientific activity Beside its role on growth, differentiation and function in the peripheral and central nervous system, NGF acts also on cells of the immune system and it is involved in inflammatory responses. Using blood samples of patients affected by rheumathoid arthritis, and tissue of rodents with experimentally-induced arthritis we have characterized the effect of this autoimmune inflammatory disorders on the basal NGF levels within the synovia, in the synovial fluid and blood circulation. We have also investigate the correlation between the amount of NGF and well estabilished inflammatory mediators, notably cytokines (IL-1 and TNF) and neuropeptides (SP). Scientific results NGF and Ethanol: Our results showed that there is an effect of alcohol consumption on brain nerve growth factor (NGF) and the NGF-target cells of adult male rats and pups exposed prenatally to ethanol. It is hypothesized that NGF, a trophic agent for the survival and maintenance of basal cholinergic neurons, might be affected by the neurodegenerative events wich occur during ethanol consumption. To test this hypothesis, we used adult rats exposed to ethanol for 16 weeks and pregnant rats exposed to ethanol for six days. Our experiment show that ethanol ingestion causes a reduction of NGF in the hippocampus, of choline acetyltransferase activity in both the septum and hippocampus, and in the distribution of NGF receptor in the basal forebrain cholinergic neurons. The results indicate that the damaging effect of alcohol on forebrain cholinergic neurons is also associated with impairment of the central NGF-target structures.

Levi-Montalcini, Rita (1901- ), Italian biologist, born in Turin and educated at the University of Turin Medical School. She shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with American biochemist Stanley Cohen for their contributions to the understanding of growth factors (see Growth Factor) in human development. Levi-Montalcini was cited for her discovery of the factor that promotes the growth of cells in the peripheral nervous system. Cohen, her student, discovered epidermal growth factors. b. 1909 Discuss by Iael Nidam-Orvieto Paola Levi-Montalcini , who became a well-known artist. When Italy entered the war on the side of Germany and the Allies began to bomb the country, the heavy bombardments of Turin in 1941 and 1942 forced Levi-Montalcini and her family to leave the city and seek refuge in a village. There she rebuilt her laboratory under more difficult and primitive conditions than before, continuing her research on fertilized eggs which she obtained from local farmers (claiming she needed fertilized eggs for better nutrition for her children). These she warmed in a simple home incubator. Despite her primitive working conditions, she succeeded in continuing her research the entire time, publishing her results in the United States after the war.

Neuroscience: One hundred years of Rita
From a home lab to the Italian Senate, by way of nerve growth factor — Rita Levi-Montalcini is a scientist like no other. Alison Abbott meets the first Nobel prizewinner set to reach her hundredth birthday. Alison Abbott Download a PDF of this story. Tiny though she is, Rita Levi-Montalcini tends to command attention. And on the morning of 18 November 2006, she had the attention of the entire Italian government. A senator for life, Levi-Montalcini held the deciding vote on a budget backed by the government of Romano Prodi, which held a parliamentary majority of just one. A few days earlier, Levi-Montalcini had said she would withdraw her support for the budget unless the government reversed a last-minute decision to sacrifice science funds. It was Levi-Montalcini versus Prodi — and Levi-Montalcini won. On the morning of the vote, immaculately turned out as always, she walked regally on the arm of an usher to her seat in the Italian senate and cast her vote. At one stroke, she secured the budget, won a battle for Italian science and snubbed Francesco Storace, leader of the Right party and part of the opposition coalition. A few weeks earlier, Storace had caused a national scandal by announcing his intention to send crutches to Levi-Montalcini's home — symbolic of her both being a crutch to an ailing government, he said, and her age, which he considered too old to be allowed to vote.

    Rita Levi-Montalcini
Rita Levi-Montalcini is a Nobel Laureate recognized for her work in the discovery and characterization of nerve growth factor Nerve growth factor (NGF) promotes the growth and maintenance of the nervous system in a developing system. The majority of her career has been devoted to investigating the many aspects of NGF Levi-Montalcini and her twin sister Paola were born on 22 April 1909 in Turin, Italy, to her father, Adamo Levi, an electrical engineer and mathematician, and mother, Adele Montalcini. In her autobiography she describes her family atmosphere as wonderful, loving, and with reciprocal devotion. Her father was a very traditional man and his daughters were not allowed to pursue a professional career, which would have interfered with their future roles as wife and mother. At the age of twenty, with the feeling she could not fit into her prescribed traditional female role, Levi-Montalcini asked her father’s permission to pursue a professional career. She filled in her required high school courses and enrolled at the University of Turin Medical School. Levi-Montalcini’s university class contained three future Nobel laureates: Salvadore Luria, Renalto Dulbecco, and herself. She attributed much of the brilliance of this class to the instructive talents of Giuseppe Levi, an Italian histologist. In 1938 she graduated
