Lewis, Edward B.
(Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvanie, 1918)
Biologiste américain. Professeur émérite à l'Institut de technologie de Californie (Caltech), où il succéda à la chaire de Thomas Hunt Morgan, ses travaux portant sur le contrôle génétique du développement de l'embryon lui valurent de recevoir (avec C. Nuesslein-Volhard et E.F. Wieschaus ) le prix Nobel de médecine et de physiologie en 1995. Il découvrit notamment les gènes homéotiques (1972), et démontra qu'ils sont tous regroupés dans une même région chromosomique et disposés dans le même ordre que celui dans lequel ils s'expriment au cours de l'embryogenèse.
