Home Library Science Dictionary of Scientists French physicist (1845–1921) Born at Hollerich in Luxembourg, Lippmann was educated at the Ecole Normale in Paris. After conducting research in Germany he became professor of probability and mathematical physics at the Sorbonne in 1883. In 1886 he became director of the laboratories for physical research and professor of physics at the Sorbonne. In 1873 he invented the Lippmann capillary electrometer , an instrument for measuring extremely small voltages. Lippmann is, however, better known for producing the first color photographic plate (1891). His color-photography process involved placing a coat of mercury behind the emulsion on the photographic plate. It is the only direct method of color photography but requires a long exposure time. For this work Lippmann was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1908. Lippmann's other inventions included a galvanometer , a seismograph , and a coelostat Deutsch Italiano Tagalog Search unanswered questions...

Lippmann, Gabriel
(b. Aug. 16, 1845, Hollerich, Luxembourgd. July 13, 1921, at sea, en route from Canada to France), French physicist who received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1908 for producing the first colour photographic plate . He was known for the innovations that resulted from his search for a direct colour-sensitive medium in photography. Though born of French parents in Luxembourg, Lippmann grew up in Paris and was a bright but unruly student. Despite the fact that he never received his teacher's certificate, he was appointed professor of mathematical physics at the Sorbonne in 1883. He later was appointed head of the Sorbonne's Laboratories of Physical Research (1886). Lippman's scientific talents were varied, but he was best known for his contributions in the fields of optics and electricity. He did early, important studies of piezoelectricity (precursors of Pierre Curie's work) and of induction in resistanceless, or superconductive, circuits (precursors of Heike Kammerlingh-Onnes' validations). He also invented the coleostat, an instrument that allowed for long-exposure photographs of the sky by compensating for the Earth's motion during the exposure.

Lippmann, Gabriel (1845-1921), a French physicist, received the 1908 Nobel Prize in physics for discovering a method of taking color photographs with black-and-white film. Lippmann was born Aug. 16, 1845, in Hollerich, Luxembourg. His French parents returned to France when Lippmann was a teen, and he was educated in Paris. In 1875, he received a doctor of science degree from the Sorbonne, the University of Paris. He became a professor of mathematical physics at the Paris Faculty of Science and later directed their research laboratory. When the laboratory was incorporated into the Sorbonne, Lippmann followed, remaining there throughout his career. In 1886, Lippmann developed a theory for recording colored images in ordinary photographic film. French physicist Edmond Becquerel had made color photographs in 1848 by using a silver plate covered with a film of silver chloride, but his pictures faded quickly.
