lysogeny Lwoff, born of Russian-Polish parents, was educated at the University of Paris. He spent his entire research career at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, serving on the board of directors from 1966 to 1972. From 1959 he was also a professor of microbiology at the Sorbonne in Paris. In his prize-winning research, he showed that, after infection, the virus is passed on to succeeding generations of bacteria in a noninfective form called a prophage . He demonstrated that under certain conditions this prophage gives rise to an infective form that causes lysis, or disintegration, of the bacterial cell; the viruses that are released upon the cell's destruction are capable of infecting other bacterial hosts. Lwoff also discovered that vitamins serve both as growth factors for microbes and as coenzymes. Among his written works are Problems of Morphogenesis in Ciliates (1950) and Biological Order During World War II Lwoff won the Medal of the Resistance for work in the French underground. He was made an officer of the Legion of Honour. Related Propaedia Topics: Life on Earth

Biography
In 1932-1933 a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to spend a year in Heidelberg in the laboratory of Otto Meyerhof . He studied haematin - a growth factor for the flagellates - the specificity of protohaematin, its quantitative effect on growth, and the part it played in the respiratory catalyst system.
Then in 1936, again with the aid of a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, Lwoff and his wife spent seven months in Cambridge in the laboratory of David Keilin; factor V, which is required by Haemophilus influenzae , was identified with cozymase and its physiological role for the bacterium was defined.

In the 1920s, Lwoff demonstrated the coenzyme nature of vitamins. He also discovered the extranuclear genetic control of some characteristics of protozoa.
In the late 1940s, Lwoff worked out the mechanism of lysogeny in bacteria, in which the DNA of a virus becomes attached to the chromosome (DNA) of a bacterium, behaving almost like a bacterial gene. It is therefore replicated as part of the host's DNA and so multiplies at the same time. But certain agents (such as ultraviolet radiation) can turn the 'latent' viral DNA, called the prophage, into a vegetative form which multiplies, destroys its host, and is released to infect other bacteria.

Lwoff Lwoff, Andr Michel 19021994. French microbiologist. He shared a 1965 Nobel Prize for the study of regulatory activity in body cells.
http://www.cartage.org.lb/fr/themes/Biographies/mainbiographie/L/Lwoff/Lwoff.htm
