Nelson Mandela. World-famous President of South Africa who was imprisoned on Robben Island for two decades. Mandela now fondly known for Mandela Children's Fund
Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the small village of Mvezo near Umtata in the former black homeland Transkei in the Republic of South Africa. His birth name was Rolihlahla meaning troublemaker. The name Nelson was given when he went to school. It was customary to have a "Western/European" name as most white people had problems pronouncing the names of black people. Mandela's father was the chief of Mvezo ("a chief is a chief by birth" traditional proverb), a position confirmed by paramount chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo of the Xhosa Thembu tribe. Although the family is descended from Thembu royalty (one of Mandela's ancestors was paramount chief in the 18th century) the line had passed down to Mandela through lesser sub-clans rather than through a line of potential succession. The clan name of Madiba, which is often used as a form of address for Mandela, comes from the ancestral chief. Mandela's mother was a Methodist, and Nelson followed in her footsteps, attending a Methodist missionary school. Mandela's father died in 1930, Nelson was circumcised in 1934 during the traditional three-month initiation school. Mandela matriculated from Clarkebury Missionary School. He attended the University of Fort Hare, South Africa's first university college for Black people in South Africa. At Fort Hare he met his lifelong friend and associate Oliver Tambo.Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo were expelled from Fort Hare in 1940 for political activism and did not complete the course.

Home E-Mail Download Lessons Interactive Quiz ... South America Nelson Mandela In 1962, Mandela began a twenty-seven year stay in prison. Most of his confinement was spent during hard labor at the notorious Robben Island maximum-security prison. Mandela’s government was praised for its treatment of South Africa’s white minorities. One white South African told our class in 1996 that "[Mandela] has treated us better than we treated him.” In the interviews I conducted over the Internet in the late 1990s, no South African of any race had kind words for apartheid. Mandela's government had its critics. Crime increased during his term, but the violent war between the races ended. Every South African I spoke with said life is better today than it was before Mandela took power. Mandela married for the third time on his 80th birthday in 1998. A year later he retired from the presidency. The 400-year-old prison on Robben Island is now a museum. NEXT: Africa Today To cite this page:

26. Long Walk To Freedom
Excerpts from Mandela s biography tell about his childhood and provide a close-up look at the struggles he faced later in life.
http://archives.obs-us.com/obs/english/books/Mandela/Mandela.html
Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's antiapartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality. Long Walk to Freedom is his moving and exhilarating autobiography, a book destined to take its place among the finest memoirs of history's greatest figures. Here for the first time, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela tells the extraordinary story of his life - an epic of struggle, setback, renewed hope, and ultimate triumph, which has, until now, been virtually unknown to most of the world. The foster son of a Thembu chief, Mandela was raised in the traditional, tribal culture of his ancestors, but at an early age learned the modern, inescapable reality of what came to be called apartheid, one of the most powerful and effective systems of oppression ever conceived. In classically elegant and engrossing prose, he tells of his early years as an impoverished student and law clerk in Johannesburg, of his slow political awakening, and of his pivotal role in the rebirth of a stagnant ANC and the formation of its Youth League in the 1950s. He describes the struggle to reconcile his political activity with his devotion to his family, the anguished breakup of his first marriage, and the painful separations from his children.

Mandela, Nelson
1918-Still alive in 2002
First South African black president by Rit Nosotro Nelson Mandela was a great political leader that fought against racism in his country, South Africa. Mandela, who was born in 1918 in Untata, South Africa, was the son of a Xhesaspeaking Thembu chief. Nelson studied in the university of Fort Hare. There he became involved in political struggle against Racism. In 1940 he was expelled for causing riots. Later in the university of South Africa, Nelson Mandela completed the studies he was doing in the previous university. Finally he studied law in Johannesburg and became involve with the African National Congress (ANC). Helping to establish the ANC's Youth League in 1944, Mandela became the president in 1951. In 1952 Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, who was his friend, became the first black men to open a law practice in South Africa. During the late 1950's, Nelson and Oliver, and other people turned the ANC into a more military direction. After the police massacred 69 black, the ANC abandoned the nonviolence strategy and Mandela helped establish the ANC's Military Wing in December 1961. After Mandela was named commander of the Military Wing he went to Algeria for military training. Later in August of 1961 Nelson was arrested in South Africa for leaving the country illegally. In June 1964 Mandela was found guilty of other charges and sentenced to life imprisonment. Nelson and other political leaders were able to keep contact with the movement, regardless of the maximum security in the Robben Island Prison. In 1994 the autobiography that Mandela wrote in prison was published. Nelson was moved to another Max-Security prison; and he became a symbol of resistance. Many of the world leaders demanded for his release. In February 1990 Mandela was released from prison.

Mandela, Nelson
1918-Still alive in 2005
First South African black president
by Rit Nosotro First Published:: 2003
"I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 to a tribal chief leader in Transkei, a province in South Africa. Mandela later became a lawyer in 1944 and joined the African National Congress (ANC) were he won the first national prominence as a black leader through protest. In the same year he was also the first black man to open up his own private law practice in South Africa. During his detention in a South African prison many people made him there symbol of injustice against the black race in South Africa. Many groups would not even talk to the government about peace until Mandela release.
