Life
Mann was born Paul Thomas Mann in Lübeck, Germany and was the second son of Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann (a senator and a grain merchant), and his wife Júlia da Silva Bruhns (a Brazilian with partially German ancestry who emigrated to Germany when seven years old). His mother was Roman Catholic, but Mann was baptised into his father's Lutheran faith. Mann's father died in 1891, and his trading firm was liquidated. The family subsequently moved to Munich. Mann attended the science division of a Lübeck gymnasium, then spent time at the Ludwig Maximillians University of Munich and Technical University of Munich where, in preparation for a journalism career, he studied history, economics, art history, and literature. He lived in Munich from 1891 until 1933, with the exception of a year in Palestrina, Italy, with his novelist elder brother Heinrich. Tribute to Thomas Gibson
Also known as Greg from the hit abc comedy "Dharma and Greg",Thomas Gibson's character, 'Gregory Clifford Montgomery', is a straight laced U.S. attorney, married to wild and wacky Dharma (Jenna Elfman). Thomas is the youngest of four children, whose father left his mother when he was 6. Growing up, Thomas excelled in baseball, golf, swimming, soccer, and football, but like his character Greg, he always got mad at himself for not making the perfect shots. The same way Jenna is a lot like Dharma, Thomas shares Greg's need for perfection. "[Greg] resubmits things that don't work to a revised attack," Thomas says. "That's something I can identify with." His co-star Jenna Elfman (Dharma) agrees, "He's particular about certain things."
"He doesn't like it when things don't go right. But he's funny about it," she says, speaking of the way he went on about the problems he was having with his new Mercedes-Benz. It seems though, like his perfection paid off, as he's doing very well in his current role in "Dharma and Greg". "He has the perfect humor, with 100 percent leading-man sex appeal," says his Jenna Elfman, of why she picked him for the role of Greg. "He has a gentlemanliness and a sexiness and a humor and a charm, and you don't usually find [that] mix." Thomas Gibson's Stats Born on July 3rd (He's 36)

Brief notes on the architect Thomas Cubitt from Bob Speel.
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/speel/arch/cubitt.htm
Thomas Cubitt (1788-1855)
Thomas Cubitt was one of the earliest, and the most important, of the speculative builders who built up large areas of London from the early 19th Century. He came from a humble background - the son of a farmer - and worked as a ship's carpenter. He started building in around 1815, designing, laying out and building streets, squares, whole districts, employing a wide range of specialised craftsmen and architects (including his brother Lewis Cubitt) on his staff in order to be able to provide a 'one stop shop'. Among his work in London may be counted Belgravia, centred around Belgrave Square , Pimlico, much of Bloomsbury, and Blackfriars Bridge . Elsewhere, he build a similarly large development in Brighton called Kemp Town, and Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Top of page Architecture pages Full list of artists Home

78. African Music Encyclopedia: Thomas Mapfumo
Thomas Mapfumo (from African Music Encyclopedia)
http://www.africanmusic.org/artists/mapfumo.html
Thomas Mapfumo
Thomas Mapfumo , born in Marondera, Zimbabwe in 1945 is also sometimes called the Lion of Zimbabwe . He is responsible for blending traditional Shona mbira music with western instruments and a political message full of innuendo and traditional proverbs. He established the musical style, chimurenga (the Shona word for struggle). In the 1970s Zimbabwe's people fought a war of independence againt their white Rhodesian rulers. Out of that grew chimurenga which is based on the Shona majority's chiming, cyclical rhythms, patterns and melodies of the mbira resulting in a hypnotric almost trance-like music. Mapfumo took that traditional music and added electric guitars, horns, and a drum kit. With his electronic interpretations of traditional mbira music he became a huge star in Zimbabwe. Being that some of his lyrics addressed the struggle for independence the white Rhodesian government felt threatened by his popularity, As a result, in 1977, Mapfumo was detained in prison for 90 days because of his song Hokoya (Watch Out). He and his band, The Blacks Unlimited now tour widely. Don't miss them!
