Born Franois Charles Mauriac in Bordeaux, Gironde department, Aquitaine, France. He studied literature at the University of Bordeaux, graduating in 1905, after which he moved to Paris to prepare for entrance in the cole des Chartes. He remained at the school only a few months after making the decision to devote himself entirely to writing. His first volume of poems, Les Mains jointes (Clasped Hands), was published in 1909 and although it gained some attention in the literary community, it was more than ten years before he came into any public prominence. His writing career was interrupted by WW I when he served in the Balkans as a Red Cross hospital orderly. A few years after the War, in 1922, he published Le Baiser aux lepreux (A Kiss for the Leper) that received wide acclaim.
In 1933, he was elected to the Acadmie franaise. During the Second World War he continued to write, publishing Le Cahier noir (The Black Notebook) under the pseudonym "Forez." Besides his more than 30 novels, Mauriac published several plays which were produced by the Comdie Franaise. He was also a distinguished journalist, working as an editorial writer for the major French newspaper, Le Figaro. In the 1950s he supported Algerian independence, condemning the use of torture by the French army. He also published a series of personal memoirs and a biography of Charles de Gaulle.

Men resemble great deserted palaces: the owner occupies only a few rooms and has closed-off wings where he never ventures. "Every novel worthy of the name is like another planet, whether large or small, which has its own laws just as it has its own flora and fauna." "I write whenever it suits me. During a creative period I write every day; a novel should not be interrupted. When I cease to be carried along, when I no longer feel as though I were taking down dictation, I stop." A good critic is the sorcerer that makes some hidden spring gush forth unexpectedly under our feet.

The religious novels of Mauriac have been a puzzle to many critics, for they abound in evidences of the dark side of life, and their religious content is not directly apparent. For instance, Le Desert de l'amour (1925) [The Desert of Love] portrays the triangle of a woman and her would-be lovers, father and son, whose unused passion, an illusion of escape, turns into the desert in whose isolation the characters live their frustrated lives. Other outstanding novels are Thrse Desqueyroux (1927) [Thrse], Le Noeud de vipres (1932) [The Knot of Vipers], La Fin de la nuit (1935) [The End of the Night], and La Pharisienne (1941) [A Woman of the Pharisees]. His most recent work has been a study of Charles de Gaulle (1964). Mauriac's complete works were published in twelve volumes between 1950 and 1956. From Nobel Lectures, Literature 1901-1967. Franois Mauriac died in 1970.
