Biography
Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov was born on May 16, 1845, in a village near Kharkoff in Russia. He was the son of an officer of the Imperial Guard, who was a landowner in the Ukraine steppes. His mother, Nevakhowitch, was of Jewish origin.
Sepiola and the Crustacean Nelalia
In 1867 he returned to Russia, having been appointed docent at the new University of Odessa and from there he went to take up a similar appointment at the University of St. Petersburg. But in 1870 he was appointed Titular Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at the University of Odessa.
In 1882, after his recovery from this disease, Mechnikov resigned his appointment at Odessa because of difficulties in the University during the period of reactionary government which followed the assassination of Alexander II.

Biography
He graduated in as Doctor of Medicine at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles Brussels Belgium ) and began his work at the Pasteur Institute in Paris in , where, in the laboratory of Elie Metchnikoff , he described phagocytosis of bacteria by white blood cells . In he described hemolysis evoked by exposure of blood serum to foreign blood cells.
In , he left Paris to found the Pasteur Institute in Brussels , and made his discovery that the bacteriolytic effect of acquired specific antibody is significantly enhanced in vivo by the presence of innate serum components which he termed alexine (but which are now known as complement ). This mechanism became the basis for complement-fixation testing methods that enabled the development of serological tests for syphilis (specifically, the development of the

    En 1867 il a retourn en Russie, ayant soit le charg de cours nomm la nouvelle Universit d'Odessa et de l il est all prendre un rendez-vous (nomination) semblable l'Universit de St.-Ptersbourg. Mais en 1870 il a t nomm le Professeur Nominal de Zoologie et l'Anatomie Comparative l'Universit d'Odessa.
    En 1882, aprs son rtablissement de cette maladie, Mechnikov a rsign son rendez-vous (nomination) Odessa cause des difficults dans l'Universit pendant la priode de gouvernement ractionnaire qui a suivi l'assassinat d'Alexandre II.
    En retournant en Odessa, Mechnikov a visit Vienne sur la voie et a expliqu ses ides Claus, le Professeur de Zoologie l et c'tait Claus qui a suggr le terme phagocyte pour les cellules de portable qui agissent de cette faon. En fin de compte en 1883, Mechnikov a donn, Odessa, son premier papier sur phagocytosis. Sauf son importance fondamentale dans immunology, la dcouverte avait une influence marque sur Mechnikov lui-mme. Il a compltement chang sa perspective de la vie; il a abandonn sa philosophie pessimiste et a dcid de trouver la nouvelle preuve de son hypothse.
