Michelson was the first United States scientist to receive a Nobel Prize. He was awarded the 1907 prize in physics for measurements of the speed of light and for inventing optical instruments. An experiment made by Michelson with Edward W. Morley in 1887 profoundly affected physics. They tried to determine the velocity of the earth in relation to a hypothetical substance called the ether. The ether was believed to be a medium through which light travels and to occupy all space not occupied by matter. The experiment showed that the velocity of light was the same in all directions, regardless of the motion of the earth, leading physicists to abandon the ether theory. The fact that the speed of light is the same regardless of the motion of the observer is a basic principle in Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity. The Michelson-Morley experiment was made possible by Michelson's invention of the interferometer, an extremely sensitive instrument used for measuring differences of length. He used the interferometer to determine the length of the standard meter in terms of a particular wavelength in the spectrum of cadmium. The instrument was also used by Michelson to confirm theories of the rigidity and viscosity of the earth and in 1920, to make the first accurate measurement of the diameter of a star.

No matter how the device was oriented, where it was placed, or when it was used, a null result was obtained. In 1890, he developed a theory for interferometric observations of single and double stars. He suggested that a telescope's resolving power could be increased using external mirrors in an arrangement he called a stellar refractometer. He made trial observations with the 15" Harvard College Observatory which failed. However, he successfully measured the diameters of the Galilean satellites using the Lick 12". He then added a steel beam across the telescope's front on which four small relay mirrors were placed, creating the device known as a Michelson stellar interferometer. He measured seven stars with the 100" Hooker Telescope, although one was later withdrawn Oct. 1991). The failure of the experiment indicated the nonexistence of the ether, and led Albert Einstein to his theory of relativity. Michelson was the first American to be awarded a Nobel prize, in 1907. He invented the Michelson interferometer to detect any difference in the velocity of light in two directions at right angles. The negative result of the Michelson-Morley experiment demonstrated that the velocity of light is constant whatever the motion of the observer. Michelson also made a precise measurement of the speed of light. Michelson was born in Strelno (now Strzelno, Poland); his family emigrated to the USA and Michelson attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. Later he studied in Europe at Berlin and Paris. He was professor at the Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, Ohio, 1882-89, and at Chicago 1892-1929. Michelson first experimented with his interferometer in 1881. The presence of ether would have caused a change in the interference pattern, but he could detect none. In collaboration with Morley, he constructed a much more sensitive interferometer, but again found no change.
